Turkish Airlines (TK) is making headlines with its strategic international expansion, recently launching its services to Sydney (SYD), Australia. The introduction of the Sydney route is a significant development for Turkish Airlines, as it becomes the carrier’s second destination in Australia, complementing its existing service to Melbourne. With this expansion, Turkish Airlines now boasts a total of 351 global destinations, underscoring its ongoing commitment to network development.
CEO Bilal Ekşi has acknowledged the operational hurdles the airline faces, particularly concerning aircraft availability. Currently, 35 aircraft are grounded due to engine issues with Airbus A320 planes, which could pose challenges for future operations. Despite receiving compensation from the engine manufacturer, Ekşi remains cautious about the potential impact on the airline’s performance.

Turkish Airlines is assessing how to establish flights to New Zealand from its main hub, Istanbul Airport (IST). While the Turkish community in New Zealand is relatively small, primarily concentrated in Auckland, the airline sees potential in the leisure travel market. Many European tourists could transit through Istanbul, making this route attractive for travelers.
- Potential Route: Turkish Airlines could operate flights from Istanbul to Auckland (AKL) with a strategic stopover in Singapore (SIN), similar to its current Sydney route.
- Flight Distance: The distance between Istanbul and Auckland is approximately 10,606 miles (17,068 kilometers). Currently, no aircraft can fly this distance non-stop.
