Australian flag carrier Qantas Airways is set to reintroduce non-stop flights between Adelaide (ADL) and Singapore (SIN), marking a significant development in international air travel for South Australia. This exciting announcement comes as the region witnesses a resurgence in international travel, bolstered by the recent resumption of direct flights from Guangzhou (CAN) to Adelaide by China Southern Airlines (CZ).
Qantas Adelaide to Singapore Flight: What to Expect
The anticipated Qantas flights will enhance connectivity and provide a vital economic boost. Historically, South Australia welcomed approximately 66,000 Chinese tourists in 2019, and the return of international routes is poised to significantly benefit tourism and trade.
- Cargo Benefits: The reinstatement of this route will unlock an additional 45 tonnes of cargo capacity weekly, further increasing South Australian exports to China, which have already hit a record $4.43 billion.
- Flight Frequency: While the current flights from China are scheduled three times a week and will continue until March next year, industry experts suggest that increasing demand may lead to year-round service.
Brenton Cox, the chief executive of Adelaide Airport, expressed optimism regarding Qantas’ return to international operations, stating, “It’s not if, it’s when.” This confidence comes after an 11-year hiatus in direct flights to Singapore.
Current Connectivity: Singapore Airlines Steps In
At present, Singapore Airlines (SQ) operates the Adelaide-Singapore route three times a week using Boeing 787-10 aircraft. Qantas may utilize its Airbus A330 fleet for its new service, enhancing competition and travel options for passengers.
Expanding Routes: Darwin to Singapore Connection
In addition to the Adelaide route, Qantas is also planning to launch direct flights from Darwin (DRW) to Singapore in March 2025, using its new Airbus A220 aircraft. This modern aircraft will operate five times a week, providing over 70,000 annual seats on this route and replacing the previously planned Embraer E190.
- Fleet Modernization: Qantas has received four of its 29 ordered A220 jets, replacing the older Boeing 717 fleet, and enhancing its operational capabilities.
- Increased Connectivity: The A220’s enhanced range will facilitate connections across Australia and open up new short-haul international routes.

Recently, Qantas has been fortifying its medium-haul international network. New flights between Brisbane (BNE) and Manila (MNL) have been inaugurated, and the airline is set to commence weekly flights from Brisbane to Palau using Boeing 737s.
