Qatar Airways Resumes Doha-Canberra Flights After 4 Years

Qatar Airways to Resume Daily Flights to Canberra in December 2025

Qatar Airways (QR) is set to reignite its connection with Canberra (CBR) after a four-year break, announcing the resumption of daily flights via Melbourne (MEL) starting in December 2025. This exciting development marks a significant milestone for the airline, which will operate the route using its Boeing 777, featuring the luxurious Qsuite Business Class and complimentary Starlink Wi-Fi for passengers.

With this new service, Canberra will become Qatar Airways’ sixth destination in Australia, allowing travelers to connect seamlessly to the airline’s extensive global network of over 170 destinations through its hub at Hamad International Airport (DOH).

Qatar Airways Canberra Flights: A New Era Begins

Originally launched in 2018, Qatar Airways’ flights to Canberra were suspended in early 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A planned restart in 2022 was delayed, as operational challenges and ground handling agreements hindered progress. However, the airline’s commitment to reinstate this vital route has now come to fruition.

Qatar Airways Group CEO, Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, emphasized the strategic importance of serving Canberra once again. "The nation’s capital, the political heart of Australia, rightly expects to be served by a range of international airlines. Our renewed service will enhance competition and provide greater choice for all passengers traveling for business, government, or leisure."

Enhancing Connectivity and Economic Growth

This renewed service is anticipated to significantly boost Canberra’s connectivity with key global destinations, particularly in Europe, the United Kingdom, and the Middle East. Canberra Airport CEO Stephen Byron described Qatar Airways’ return as a "pivotal moment" for the region, creating opportunities for over one million residents.

Byron stated, “This service not only provides access to a global network but also drives economic development, creates jobs, and fosters tourism. It enhances connectivity and strengthens business links, supporting the Government’s goal of AU$5 billion in visitor expenditure by 2030.”

Partnership with Virgin Australia

In addition to the flight resumption, this new route will align with Qatar Airways’ ongoing partnership with Virgin Australia (VA), pending regulatory approvals. This collaboration will facilitate seamless connectivity for passengers traveling from Canberra to over 100 destinations across Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.

Loyalty members from both Qatar Airways’ Privilege Club and Virgin Australia’s Velocity Frequent Flyer programs will benefit from expanded perks, including the ability to earn and redeem points and access to reciprocal lounge services.

Positive Impact on Local Tourism

ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr welcomed this announcement, heralding its potential to boost local tourism and attract international students. He noted, “Aviation access is the biggest driver of growth in the sector. Qatar Airways’ return will benefit the entire Canberra region, creating tourism, trade, and investment opportunities.”

As Qatar Airways prepares to welcome travelers back to Canberra, the airline looks forward to contributing to the city’s growth and connectivity on a global scale.
