Air India Expands Pilot Training Capabilities with Order of 34 Trainer Aircraft
In a significant move to enhance pilot training in India, Tata Group-owned Air India has placed an order for 34 trainer aircraft to support cadet pilots at South Asia’s largest Flying Training Organisation (FTO). This state-of-the-art facility is set to open at Belora Airport in Amravati, Maharashtra, by the second half of 2025, pending regulatory approvals. This strategic initiative underscores Air India’s commitment to developing a robust training infrastructure amidst a booming aviation sector.
The order comprises 31 single-engine aircraft from the U.S.-based Piper Aircraft and three twin-engine aircraft from Austria’s Diamond Aircraft. These modern aircraft are equipped with advanced glass cockpits, G1000 avionics systems, and Jet A1 engines, ensuring that aspiring pilots receive cutting-edge training to meet industry demands.
Air India’s Vision for Pilot Training
This initiative is part of Air India’s ambitious Vihaan.AI transformation program, aimed at strengthening the nation’s pilot training capabilities and ensuring a steady supply of skilled aviators for its expanding fleet. The new FTO is poised to graduate 180 commercial pilots annually, furthering Air India’s efforts toward self-reliance in pilot training.
Deliveries of the trainer aircraft are expected to commence in 2025, marking a pivotal step in enhancing aviation education in India.
Commitment to Quality and Safety
Sunil Bhaskaran, Director of Air India’s Aviation Academy, highlighted that this initiative aligns with the Indian government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat vision, addressing the increasing demand for qualified pilots in India’s rapidly growing aviation market.
The FTO will cover 10 acres at Belora Airport and will feature advanced facilities including:
- Digitally enabled classrooms
- A digitized operations center
- On-site maintenance facilities
- Hostels for cadets
Designed to meet global standards, the institute will deliver high-quality training focused on safety and operational efficiency.
Building a Stronger Aviation Ecosystem
This development follows Air India’s recent inauguration of its Aviation Training Academy in Gurugram, which spans 600,000 sq ft and is recognized as the largest facility of its kind in South Asia. This academy is a cornerstone of Air India’s Vihaan.AI program, which aims to cultivate a self-reliant pipeline of qualified pilots, enhancing India’s aviation ecosystem.
