Air Canada (AC) is set to enhance its passenger experience by relocating its operations to the new Terminal 6 (T6) at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in 2026. This strategic move positions Air Canada alongside other Star Alliance members, marking an important milestone in JFK’s ambitious $19 billion modernization project. The shift to Terminal 6 is expected to provide travelers with state-of-the-art amenities and improved connectivity.
Air Canada Moves to JFK Terminal 6: A New Era of Travel
As a founding member of Star Alliance, Air Canada will join leading airlines such as Lufthansa, SWISS, and Austrian Airlines at the upcoming Terminal 6. This terminal development is a vital component of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s effort to transform JFK into a world-class travel hub.
The extensive $19 billion investment will not only build two new terminals but also expand existing facilities, enhance transportation access, and optimize traffic flow throughout the airport.
Highlights of JFK Terminal 6
- Enhanced Passenger Experience: Terminal 6 will offer a boutique, digital-first travel experience, featuring NYC-inspired dining options, curated public art, and premium lounges.

- Efficient Layout: With an average walking time of under five minutes from security to any gate, Terminal 6 prioritizes passenger convenience.
Currently, Air Canada operates out of Terminal 7 at JFK, providing daily flights to Toronto and Montreal. These flights are pre-cleared for U.S. customs in Canada, streamlining the travel process for passengers. This service, launched in March 2023, complements Air Canada’s extensive operations at LaGuardia and Newark airports, with a total of 36 daily flights between the New York area and Canada.
The Future of JFK Terminal 6
JFK Terminal 6 is set to open in two phases: phase one will feature six boarding gates and is scheduled for completion in 2026, while the entire terminal is expected to be fully operational by 2028. The terminal will have ten gates, nine of which will accommodate widebody aircraft, along with advanced baggage handling and security systems.
Passengers can look forward to one of JFK’s longest departure areas, complete with dedicated drop-off zones and multiple lounge options. Additionally, the terminal will showcase New York City-inspired artwork, featuring local and international artists through partnerships with the Public Art Fund.
