Air India Celebrates 100th Friday Communication Milestone
GURUGRAM – Air India, a subsidiary of the Tata Group, recently marked a significant achievement with its CEO Campbell Wilson celebrating the 100th consecutive Friday communication on January 10, 2025. This initiative, launched in August 2022, underscores the airline’s commitment to transparency and direct engagement with its employees amid its ongoing transformation program.
The Friday communication initiative began during Air India’s privatization and integration efforts, proving to be an essential platform for fostering open dialogue and connecting with staff across the airline.
Air India CEO Reflects on Communication Success
During this milestone, Campbell Wilson emphasized the critical role of maintaining regular communication channels, even as the airline has made substantial strides in its transformation journey. He also acknowledged the recent celebration of Vistara’s 10th anniversary on January 9, 2025, highlighting its significant evolution into a key player within the privatized Air India structure.
Furthermore, the merger has ushered in major developments, including a stake from Singapore Airlines (SQ) in Air India and the appointment of Singapore Airlines CEO Goh Choon Phong to Air India’s Board of Directors.
Expansion of Air India’s Fleet and Routes
Air India continues to expand its operations, recently celebrating one year of its A350 aircraft fleet in India. The airline has added new international routes, including the Delhi-Newark service, complementing its existing flights to New York (JFK) and London (Heathrow). To commemorate this achievement, the airline’s crew recreated iconic imagery from New York, symbolizing its growing global footprint.
Under Wilson’s leadership, Air India has seen remarkable operational developments, including facility tours of the Vatika and the Training Academy with the Singapore Airlines CEO. Other Significant Milestones Achieved by Air India
Air India has achieved several key operational milestones as part of its transformation journey:
- Wi-Fi Services: Air India has become the first Indian airline to offer Wi-Fi services on all domestic and international flights, equipped on its A350, 787-9, and select A321neo aircraft.
- Pilot Training Expansion: The airline is set to enhance its training capabilities with the acquisition of 34 trainer aircraft from Piper Aircraft (US) and Diamond Aircraft (Austria). A new flying school in Amravati, Maharashtra, is expected to commence operations in the latter half of 2025, training 180 pilot candidates annually.
- Maintenance Operations Improvement: Currently, 42 out of 55 domestic stations are managed directly by Air India staff, with plans to complete in-housing of the remaining stations by April. This transition aims to improve quality control and enhance maintenance capabilities.
- Destination Expansion: Air India Express (IX) has celebrated its 50th destination with the addition of Bangkok to its network and is set to launch a new Hyderabad-Phuket service.
- Safety Initiatives: The airline hosted an industry-first symposium on Dangerous Goods Regulation (DGR), themed ‘Safety Beyond Competition,’ bringing together stakeholders from various airlines.
Additionally, Captain Devi Sharan, known for his leadership during the IC814 hijacking and humanitarian evacuations, has retired after 40 years of service, marking the end of an era in aviation safety and humanitarian efforts.
