ITA Airways Joins Lufthansa as Fifth Network Airline
ITA Airways Joins Lufthansa Group: A New Era for Italian Aviation
Italian carrier ITA Airways has officially become the fifth network airline within the Lufthansa Group, marking a significant shift in the European aviation landscape. This strategic partnership, finalized on January 18, 2025, allows Lufthansa Group to acquire a 41% stake in ITA Airways, while the Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) retains 59%. This collaboration aims to enhance connectivity and service offerings for passengers traveling through Italy and beyond.
The alliance was initially agreed upon in May 2023, with the European Commission granting preliminary approval on November 29, 2024, following the acceptance of proposed remedies. Approval from other global competition authorities has also been secured. The partnership begins with a substantial capital increase of €325 million, with plans for Lufthansa Group to potentially acquire additional shares in ITA Airways in the near future.
Strengthening the Italian Aviation Market
Carsten Spohr, CEO of Lufthansa Group, expressed enthusiasm about the investment, stating, “With our investment, we will now strengthen the Italian and European aviation market.” He emphasized that passengers will enjoy enhanced offers and optimized connections starting with the upcoming summer flight schedule.
As part of the new agreement, significant leadership changes have been implemented within ITA Airways. Joerg Eberhart has been appointed as the new CEO, while Lorenza Maggio steps in as Chief Strategy and Integration Officer, joining the Board of Directors. Additionally, Michael Trestl assumes the role of ITA Implementation Officer.
Focus on Connectivity and Expansion
Lufthansa’s strategy aims to enhance ITA Airways’ connectivity, particularly through Rome’s Fiumicino Airport (FCO), which will serve as the airline’s primary hub. Spohr noted, “Italy will thus become a further ‘home market’ for the Lufthansa Group.” With Italy being the group’s second most important international market after the USA, this partnership is poised to boost travel options for passengers.
Key expansion plans include:
- New Routes: ITA Airways will launch direct flights from Rome to Bogotá, Colombia.
- Increased Frequencies: The airline plans to enhance flight services to various Brazilian cities, complementing existing routes to São Paulo (GRU) and Rio de Janeiro (GIG).
- Improved US Connections: Lufthansa aims to strengthen ties between its networks in Eastern Europe and the United States.
Looking Ahead
The integration of ITA Airways into the Lufthansa Group promises to reshape the aviation experience in Italy, offering travelers more comprehensive options and improved connectivity. As this new chapter unfolds, the aviation community and passengers alike are eager to see the developments that arise from this partnership.
