IndiGo Expands Operations to Europe: Aiming for Long-Haul Success

GURGAON – IndiGo (6E), India’s largest airline, is making significant strides in expanding its operations to Europe as it seeks to capture a larger share of the long-haul travel market. The airline has formally applied for daily flight slots at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS) for routes originating from Mumbai (BOM) and Delhi (DEL) in the upcoming summer schedule. This move marks a pivotal step in IndiGo’s international growth strategy.

In addition to enhancing its flight offerings, IndiGo is bolstering its management team and sales efforts, particularly in the cargo sector, to support its long-haul ambitions. According to Hindu BusinessLine, the airline is also planning fleet expansions to accommodate new routes and increased capacity.

IndiGo Applies for Amsterdam Slots

IndiGo’s application for daily slots at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport reflects its commitment to establishing a robust presence in Europe. This strategic move is designed to align with IndiGo’s long-term international expansion goals, further diversifying its route network.

To strengthen its European operations, IndiGo is enhancing its leadership team, promoting Mark Sutch, the former Chief Commercial Officer (Cargo), to oversee international development while also maintaining his cargo responsibilities. Additionally, Liesbeth Oudkerk, a former executive with Qatar Airways, has been appointed as the regional head for Europe, signaling IndiGo’s serious intentions in the market.

• New Management Hires: IndiGo is actively recruiting managers for key locations including London, Paris, and Amsterdam to facilitate its European strategy.

• Fleet Expansion: IndiGo plans to augment its long-haul capabilities with the addition of Airbus A321XLR aircraft later this year and Airbus A350s starting in 2027. In the interim, the airline will wet lease six Boeing 787 aircraft from Norse Atlantic Airways, with initial flights planned to Bangkok (BKK) or Singapore (SIN) before transitioning to European routes.

IndiGo’s Strategy for Europe Expansion

As it ventures into Europe, IndiGo will encounter formidable competition from established airlines such as Air India (AI), Emirates (EK), and Etihad Airways (EY), which currently dominate the India-Europe travel market. Popular destinations for Indian travelers include London, Paris, Frankfurt, Istanbul, and Amsterdam.

Currently, IndiGo holds approximately 6% of the market share on European routes, with existing flights to Baku (Azerbaijan), Istanbul (Turkey), and Tbilisi (Georgia). Moreover, a codeshare agreement with Turkish Airlines (TK) enables IndiGo to offer tickets to over 30 European destinations, significantly enhancing its market reach.

Aviation analysts are speculating that IndiGo may explore deeper partnerships with Air France-KLM (FR) and Virgin Atlantic (VS) as it expands into Europe. Such collaborations could prove invaluable in securing airport slots and providing essential passenger and cargo feed.

Operational Challenges Ahead

Despite its ambitious expansion plans, IndiGo faces considerable regulatory challenges. The Dutch government has proposed a reduction in flight operations at Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS), complicating efforts for new entrants to secure permanent slots. IndiGo is currently engaged in discussions with local authorities to navigate these challenges.
