airBaltic Welcomes 50th Airbus A220-300 with Unique Livery
airBaltic Celebrates Milestone with 50th Airbus A220-300 Arrival at Riga Airport
Latvian airline airBaltic has proudly celebrated the arrival of its 50th Airbus A220-300 aircraft, marking a significant milestone for the carrier. The special ceremony took place on February 13, 2025, at Riga Airport (RIX), where approximately 200 attendees gathered to witness this momentous event. The new aircraft, adorned with a unique livery, showcases airBaltic’s commitment to expanding its fleet and enhancing its operations.
The ceremony featured a stunning low-pass landing of the Airbus A220-300, which captivated attendees and highlighted the airline’s journey since becoming the global launch operator of this innovative aircraft eight years ago. "As we welcome our 50th Airbus A220-300, it marks a major milestone, completing our initial order and bringing us halfway toward our goal of a single-type fleet of 100 aircraft by 2030," stated Martin Gauss, President and CEO of airBaltic.
Unique Design Reflecting Baltic Heritage
The 50th Airbus A220-300 is not just another addition to the fleet; it showcases an artistic livery inspired by the Latvian flag and highlights the cultural heritage of all three Baltic States: Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania. The design features a young woman soaring through the clouds, adorned with a traditional wreath and carrying the Latvian flag. Additional symbolic elements, such as a ladybug, a swallow, and a stork, emphasize the region’s rich heritage.
The creation of this bespoke livery took 18 days and involved the use of 21 colors. For the first time, a stencil overlay technique was employed by the Airbus A220 paintshop teams in Mirabel, Canada, to achieve the intricate design.
The A220-300: A State-of-the-Art Aircraft
The new Airbus A220-300 is set to enhance the airBaltic fleet with its advanced features and capabilities. Designed to accommodate between 100 to 150 passengers, the aircraft can operate on flights of up to 3,600 nautical miles (6,700 kilometers). As the airline’s latest addition, the A220-300 is regarded as the "most modern airliner in its size category," further solidifying airBaltic’s position as a leading carrier in the region.
Kaspars Briškens, Minister of Transport of the Republic of Latvia, commented on the significance of the new aircraft, stating, "This aircraft, with its striking Baltic-themed livery, symbolizes our region’s ambition, connectivity, and the strength of our national carrier."
Looking Ahead: airBaltic’s Future Plans
