SYDNEY – In an exciting development for international travel, Tata Group-owned Air India (AI) and Virgin Australia (VA) have established a strategic codeshare partnership that significantly improves travel connectivity between India and Australia. This new collaboration allows Air India customers to enjoy streamlined travel options from Delhi to major Australian cities like Melbourne and Sydney, with seamless connections to 16 additional destinations across Australia and New Zealand.

The Air India Virgin Australia codeshare agreement enables Air India to operate under its ‘AI’ code on Virgin Australia flights, creating a more efficient travel experience. Passengers can now check their baggage through to their final destination on a single ticket, simplifying the overall journey.

• Expanded Network: This collaboration covers major Australian cities such as Adelaide, Brisbane, Perth, and Darwin, along with popular tourist locations like the Gold Coast and Hamilton Island in Australia, and Queenstown in New Zealand.

Air India’s Chief Commercial Officer, Nipun Aggarwal, emphasized the significance of Australia in their international strategy, serving the large Indian diaspora while attracting tourists eager to explore Australia’s renowned attractions, including the stunning beaches of the Gold Coast and the iconic Great Barrier Reef.

Travel Experience and Flight Details

Air India offers daily non-stop flights connecting Delhi (DEL) with Melbourne (MEL) and Sydney (SYD) using Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft. Each aircraft features 18 flat-bed Business Class seats and 238 Economy Class seats, ensuring a comfortable journey. Passengers continuing on Virgin Australia will enjoy premium cabin services across both classes.

The codeshare operations are set to commence with bookings opening on February 11, 2025, and flights commencing on February 18, 2025. Regulatory authorities will provide final approval for the Queenstown, New Zealand route.
