Air China, the flagship airline of China, is set to enhance its long-haul offerings by introducing Boeing 747 aircraft on its Beijing to Washington D.C. route starting March 11, 2025. Air China 747 Route Details

The revamped Beijing to Washington route will now operate as a direct service, eliminating the previous layover in Los Angeles. Below is the flight schedule for this new service:

• Flight CA817: Departing Beijing Capital International Airport at 12:30 PM, arriving at Washington Dulles International Airport at 3:10 PM.
• Return Flight CA818: Departing Washington at 5:35 PM, arriving back in Beijing at 10:30 PM the following day.

This new service replaces the Boeing 777-300ER that previously operated on this route, making it a rare addition of passenger 747 service to U.S. airspace, where the jumbo jet has largely disappeared from regular operations.

As of now, Air China operates a fleet of seven Boeing 747-8i aircraft, which are utilized for select domestic routes within China and international destinations. Additionally, the airline plans to expand its 747-8i service to Frankfurt, Germany, starting next month.

Historical Context of the Boeing 747 on This Route

While the 747-8i has previously flown on Air China’s Washington route, these instances were isolated, occurring during select periods in 2017, 2019, and 2020. In addition to the introduction of the Boeing 747 on its Washington route, Air China is making several adjustments to its long-haul network for the Northern summer 2025 season. These changes include:

• Beijing to Athens: Transitioning to Airbus A330-300 aircraft, effective April 1, 2025, with a reduced frequency from five to three weekly flights.
• Beijing to Barcelona: Maintaining daily Airbus A350-900 service starting March 30, 2025.
• Beijing to Dubai: Upgrading to Airbus A350-900 aircraft from the Boeing 787-9, effective March 1, 2025.
• Beijing to London Gatwick: Switching to Airbus A350-900 aircraft starting March 30, 2025, with a planned service suspension between April 29 and May 29, 2025.
• Increased Capacity for Australian Routes: Melbourne service will rise from four to five weekly flights between July 12 and August 9, 2025, while Sydney service will also see an increase during the peak summer period.
