Cathay Pacific Launches Direct Flights to Urumqi: Expanding Its Reach in China

Cathay Pacific is excited to announce the launch of direct flights between Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) and Urumqi Diwopu International Airport (URC), situated in China’s northwestern region. Starting April 28, 2025, these four-times-weekly flights will utilize the airline’s Airbus A330-300 aircraft, marking a significant expansion in Cathay Pacific’s network.

Urumqi becomes Cathay Pacific’s 20th destination in mainland China, further solidifying its commitment to connecting Hong Kong with key locations across the region. "Urumqi is an exciting new addition to our network, directly connecting our home city with an important Belt and Road hub in Northwestern China,” stated Lavinia Lau, Cathay’s Chief Customer and Commercial Officer.

Expanding Flight Options from Hong Kong

Cathay Pacific’s new service to Urumqi underscores the airline’s dedication to enhancing travel options for its customers. Lau emphasized, “As Hong Kong’s home airline, we have deep roots in our home city and are proudly part of China. We are committed to providing our customers with even more destination and flight choices when traveling between Hong Kong, the Chinese Mainland, and beyond.”

In addition to Urumqi, Cathay Pacific has plans to launch several new direct flights from Hong Kong in 2025:

  • Hyderabad: Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (HYD) in March
  • Dallas: Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) in April
  • Rome: Leonardo da Vinci Fiumicino Airport (FCO) and Munich Airport (MUC) in June
  • Brussels: Brussels Airport (BRU) in August

HK Express: New Routes on the Horizon

HK Express, the low-cost carrier fully owned by Cathay Pacific, is also expanding its offerings. The airline inaugurated services to Japan’s Sendai Airport (SDJ) in January 2025, with plans to launch additional direct flights to:

  • Nha Trang: Cam Ranh International Airport (CXR) in April
  • Komatsu Airport: (KMQ) in April
  • New Ishigaki Airport: (ISG) in April
  • Miyako Shimojishima: (SHI) in June
