GURUGRAM – Air India, under the ownership of the Tata Group, has proudly reintroduced its first retrofitted narrowbody aircraft, the Airbus A320neo, marking a pivotal moment in the airline’s extensive transformation. This newly refurbished aircraft, registered as VT-EXN, symbolizes the initial success of Air India’s ambitious retrofit program, which encompasses 27 narrowbody aircraft acquired during the Tata Group’s takeover.

Air India’s Retrofitted A320neo: Key Updates

The Airbus A320neo has undergone significant enhancements, including new seating arrangements, upgraded carpets, modern curtains, a refreshed cabin ambience, and a complete exterior repaint that showcases Air India’s new branding. The retrofit process commenced last year as part of a comprehensive $400 million fleet upgrade initiative launched by the Tata Group.

These retrofitted A320neo aircraft will operate in tandem with 14 newly delivered A320neos, ensuring passengers enjoy a consistent and elevated travel experience across both domestic and short-haul international routes. The complete retrofit program for the narrowbody fleet is expected to conclude by the third quarter of 2025.

What’s Included in the Retrofit?

The extensive retrofit involves:

  • Installation of over 3,500 new Economy Class seats
  • More than 600 Premium Economy seats
  • Approximately 200 Business Class seats

The refurbishment requires substantial materials, including:

  • 450 meters of premium leather
  • 15,000 meters of high-quality fabric
  • 4,000 meters of plush carpeting

Each retrofitted A320neo features a three-class configuration comprising eight Business Class seats, 24 Premium Economy seats with generous legroom, and 132 Economy seats. Modern amenities such as portable electronic device holders, USB ports, spacious legroom, and wider seat pitch enhance passenger comfort.

Beyond the Narrowbody Fleet: Air India’s Broader Transformation

Air India’s modernization efforts extend beyond its narrowbody fleet. The airline plans to upgrade 40 widebody Boeing 787 and 777 aircraft, with the first Boeing 787 scheduled to enter the retrofit process next month. Additionally, Air India has placed a follow-up order for 90 more Airbus A320neos and 10 A350s, further expanding its fleet.

Inside the Retrofitted A320neo: A Closer Look

The newly retrofitted A320neo introduces a modern three-class cabin arrangement, enhancing passenger choice and comfort. The redesigned interiors include:

  • Business Class: 8 ergonomic seats with a 40-inch design and a 7-inch recline, equipped with adjustable armrests and multiple charging ports.
  • Premium Economy: 24 larger seats featuring superior upholstery and a 32-inch pitch with 4-inch recline, enhanced by portable electronic device holders.
  • Economy Class: Ergonomically designed seats with a 28-29 inch pitch and 4-inch recline, designed for maximum passenger convenience.

Air India’s Engineering team leads the project in collaboration with global manufacturers such as Collins, Astronics, and Thales, with a focus on installing over 15,000 next-generation seats across all cabin classes.

This cabin upgrade initiative forms a vital part of Air India’s transformation strategy since the Tata Group acquired the airline on January 27, 2022. The new leadership is dedicated to enhancing the passenger experience while pursuing significant fleet and network expansion.
