Qatar Airways (QR) is poised to enhance its presence in Germany by expanding its flight network to more destinations. Unlike its competitor Emirates (EK), which is restricted to four German cities, Qatar Airways benefits from an Air Services Agreement that allows for greater flexibility and expansion. This strategic move aims to tap into the growing travel demand between Qatar and Germany.

Currently, Qatar Airways operates flights to five major German cities: Düsseldorf (DUS), Hamburg (HAM), Frankfurt (FRA), Berlin (BER), and Munich (MUC). Future expansion could potentially include Stuttgart (STR), as revealed by Chief Commercial Officer Thierry Antinori in a recent interview with Airliners.de.

The relationship between Qatar and Germany dates back to 1973, when diplomatic relations were established. The first direct flights commenced in the late 1990s, with Qatar Airways launching its inaugural service to Frankfurt in 1998, which served as a key European gateway for the airline.

Over the years, the partnership strengthened with further expansions:

German investments have played a crucial role in Qatar’s development, particularly during infrastructure projects for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The aviation relationship has evolved significantly since Lufthansa (LH) operated flights to Doha from 1993 until 2017, when it ceased operations due to increased competition from Gulf carriers.

Recently, Qatar Airways announced plans to increase its Doha-Berlin route frequency to 21 flights per week by adding three more weekly flights.

Gulf airlines like Qatar Airways are capitalizing on the focus of national carriers on hub-based long-haul flights, filling connectivity gaps to secondary markets via their Middle Eastern hubs.
