NEW DELHI – IndiGo (6E), India’s premier airline, has unveiled an ambitious target to transport 200 million passengers annually by 2030. This goal marks an impressive 80% increase from the 113 million passengers carried in 2024, according to LiveMint. To achieve this significant milestone, IndiGo plans to implement a robust strategy focused on fleet expansion and international route development.

IndiGo’s 200 Million Passengers Target

IndiGo (6E) currently holds a commanding 61.9% market share in the Indian aviation industry. With a market capitalization of ₹1,96,807 crore ($22.8 billion), it has positioned itself as the third most valuable airline globally. Despite generating lower revenue than major international carriers like Delta (DL), IndiGo’s profitability and its presence in the world’s fastest-growing aviation market have attracted considerable investor interest.

The airline aims to increase its fleet from 439 to 600 aircraft by the end of the decade. Senior executives have revealed plans to expand international routes significantly, targeting a 40% share of international outbound traffic, up from the current 28%. This strategy includes a shift towards premiumization, with the introduction of more business-class seats.

Strategic Expansion Plans

Analysts have praised IndiGo’s strategic approach to expanding long-haul routes. Starting in fiscal year 2025, the airline will introduce wide-bodied Airbus A321XLRs to service European markets. Furthermore, IndiGo plans to establish networks with leased Boeing 787s beginning in July 2025 and incorporate A350s from fiscal year 2027 to target North American routes.

Currently, IndiGo has an impressive order book of 925 aircraft, which theoretically allows for the delivery of one aircraft per week until fiscal year 2030. However, industry experts warn of potential global supply chain challenges that may delay aircraft deliveries.

Operational Challenges Facing IndiGo

Despite its ambitious plans, IndiGo (6E) is not without challenges. The airline continues to face engine issues from Pratt and Whitney, which have resulted in grounded planes. While the number of grounded aircraft has decreased from 60 to 40 during the October to December period, supply constraints remain a significant concern.

Leading this expansion is CEO Pieter Elbers, who joined IndiGo (6E) in 2022 after a successful tenure at KLM (KL). Elbers and his leadership team are tasked with balancing the airline’s budget carrier roots while pursuing international growth and premium offerings.
