United Airlines Boosts San Francisco Flights by 20% in 2025

United Airlines Expands Flight Operations at San Francisco International Airport by 20% in 2025

In a significant move to strengthen its presence on the West Coast, United Airlines (UA) has announced plans to increase its flight operations at San Francisco International Airport (SFO) by 20% in 2025. This ambitious strategy aims to reestablish SFO as a premier global gateway, enhancing travel options for passengers and boosting the local economy.

Currently, United Airlines operates at 6% higher capacity from SFO compared to pre-pandemic levels, with a remarkable 20% increase over last year’s operations. The expansion underscores the airline’s commitment to meeting the growing demand for air travel in the Bay Area.

United Airlines’ Commitment to Growth at SFO

United Airlines currently serves 111 destinations worldwide from San Francisco and anticipates approximately 300 daily flights this summer. This marks the highest operational capacity since 2019, outperforming all other airlines in the Bay Area.

In the past four years, the airline has expanded its network with 11 new international and nine domestic destinations. Notable reinstated services include flights to New Orleans, Kansas City, Detroit, and St. Louis. Additionally, United is set to launch exciting new routes to San Jose, Costa Rica, and Panama City, Panama, next month.

“Our growth at SFO is a direct result of United’s ambitious network strategy,” said United CEO Scott Kirby. “We’re attracting more Bay Area customers because of our investments in product quality, customer experience, and the destinations we serve.”

SFO’s $2.6 Billion Expansion Project

A significant component of United’s growth strategy at SFO is the ongoing $2.6 billion construction project aimed at modernizing and expanding Terminal 3. Set to be completed by 2029, this initiative will enhance United Airlines’ operational capabilities and improve the overall customer experience.

  • Project Highlights:
    • New common-use gates for larger aircraft on international flights
    • Additional United Club locations
    • State-of-the-art lobby and advanced security checkpoints
    • Redesigned curbside area and 200,000 square feet of new space for dining and retail options

“SFO is on the path to becoming an extraordinary airport experience for our guests,” stated Mike Nakornkhet, SFO Airport Director. “This modernization project will set a new benchmark for customer expectations at United Airlines.”

Job Creation and Economic Impact

United Airlines is not only expanding its flight operations but is also a key employer in the Bay Area. With over 13,000 local team members, the airline hired more than 1,600 airport operations employees last year and plans to add another 1,200 positions by 2025. This growth is essential for supporting United’s expanding operations at SFO and contributing to the local economy.

San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie praised the expansion, emphasizing the importance of tourism to the city’s recovery. "United’s expansion shows that people want to be here," he said, noting that new flights will create jobs and facilitate easier access for visitors.

Innovations Transforming Travel Experience

United Airlines is also at the forefront of technology, continuously enhancing its services to improve the travel experience. The airline has recently partnered with industry leaders to implement innovative solutions, including:

  • Starlink Wi-Fi Service: Launching next month, this service will provide high-speed internet access on select United Express flights.
  • All-Electric Air Taxi Service: United plans to introduce commercial air taxi services through its partnership with Archer, utilizing the Midnight aircraft, which is designed to reduce carbon emissions.
  • Mobile Innovations: United has integrated advanced features into its mobile app, including real-time radar maps and alternative travel options during disruptions, making the travel process more seamless for customers.
