Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport (BLR) has made headlines by becoming the first airport in Asia to achieve the prestigious Level 5 Carbon Accreditation. Officially recognized as of May 5, 2024, this significant milestone underscores the aviation sector’s commitment to sustainability and environmental conservation across the continent.

The formal presentation of this accolade took place during the Airports Council International (ACI) Asia-Pacific & Middle East Regional Assembly held in New Delhi from April 15 to 17. Significant Emission Reduction Targets

Bengaluru Airport (BLR) achieved its Level 5 status by accomplishing an impressive 95.6% reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions. This significant reduction allowed the airport to reach net-zero status for these categories of emissions, a full seven years ahead of its initial target set for 2030.

• Scope 1 emissions include direct emissions from sources owned or controlled by the airport, like fuel combustion.
• Scope 2 emissions refer to indirect emissions from electricity and other utilities consumed by the airport.
