Bengaluru Airport First in Asia to Earn Level 5 Carbon Accreditation

Bengaluru International Airport Achieves Historic Level 5 Carbon Accreditation

Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport (BLR) has made headlines by becoming the first airport in Asia to achieve the prestigious Level 5 Carbon Accreditation. Officially recognized as of May 5, 2024, this significant milestone underscores the aviation sector’s commitment to sustainability and environmental conservation across the continent.

The formal presentation of this accolade took place during the Airports Council International (ACI) Asia-Pacific & Middle East Regional Assembly held in New Delhi from April 15 to 17. This event served as a fitting backdrop for Bengaluru Airport’s groundbreaking achievement, which highlights the airport’s relentless efforts in reducing its environmental footprint.

Bengaluru Airport’s Path to Carbon Accreditation

Representatives from Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) announced the remarkable news, emphasizing the airport’s exceptional progress in systematic carbon management and its commitment to sustainability. The Level 5 Accreditation is a testament to the airport’s proactive measures in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Significant Emission Reduction Targets

Bengaluru Airport (BLR) achieved its Level 5 status by accomplishing an impressive 95.6% reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions. This significant reduction allowed the airport to reach net-zero status for these categories of emissions, a full seven years ahead of its initial target set for 2030.

  • Scope 1 emissions include direct emissions from sources owned or controlled by the airport, like fuel combustion.
  • Scope 2 emissions refer to indirect emissions from electricity and other utilities consumed by the airport.

Hari Marar, Managing Director & CEO of BIAL, remarked on this milestone, stating, “The recognition from ACI affirms the collective effort we’ve made to not only reduce our carbon footprint but also to support a culture of safety, innovation, and community stewardship.”

Comprehensive Sustainability Initiatives

The journey to achieving Level 5 Accreditation involved extensive sustainability initiatives, including:

  • Transitioning to renewable energy sources.
  • Optimizing energy consumption through advanced building management systems.
  • Deploying electric vehicles throughout airport operations.

BIAL has heavily invested in on-site solar energy generation, which significantly contributes to powering airport operations with clean energy. Additional efforts in water conservation, waste management, and biodiversity protection complement the airport’s carbon reduction strategy.

A Global Model for Environmental Responsibility

Bengaluru Airport’s achievement places it among a select group of global airports committed to environmental sustainability. As the aviation industry faces increasing scrutiny regarding its environmental impact, Bengaluru’s success serves as an exemplary model for airports worldwide.

This accomplishment aligns with India’s broader goals for carbon reduction and environmental protection, showcasing the country’s capability to implement world-class sustainability practices in major infrastructure projects. As Bengaluru Airport continues to expand, its established environmental protocols will ensure that future growth remains environmentally responsible, balancing operational efficiency with ecological stewardship.
