Extended Delay for Air India Express Flight IX484: Passengers Left Stranded in Dammam

BENGALURU – Air India Express (IX) Flight IX484, carrying over 150 passengers, faced an unprecedented delay of more than 24 hours at King Fahad International Airport in Dammam, Saudi Arabia (DMM). Originally scheduled to depart for Bengaluru (BLR) at 8:30 PM on April 25, 2025, the flight experienced multiple postponements due to persistent technical malfunctions, as reported by the Times of India.

Air India Express Passengers Left in Limbo

Flight IX484 was initially slated for departure at 8:30 PM on April 25, but passengers were informed on April 26 that maintenance teams had only “temporarily fixed” the technical issues. At 1:30 PM Saudi time, travelers were instructed to board the aircraft, but the situation worsened when the plane halted unexpectedly during taxiing, raising further doubts about its airworthiness. Ultimately, the flight departed at midnight on April 26, approximately 27.5 hours later than scheduled.

During the prolonged delay, many passengers took to social media to document their experiences, raising alarm over safety standards and the airline’s crisis management effectiveness in Dammam.

Passenger Reactions to the Delay

One frustrated traveler expressed their outrage to the Times of India, stating, “This is not just management; it is sheer negligence. Passenger lives are being put at serious risk.” Another passenger highlighted significant service gaps, declaring, “The situation reveals a glaring gap in passenger care and service standards.”

PA Hammed Padubidri, an advocate residing in Saudi Arabia for over two decades, expressed grave concerns over Air India Express’s operational practices. He noted, “I am in continuous contact with the stranded passengers and am coordinating with the relevant authorities to address this alarming pattern of delays and mismanagement. Passenger rights and safety must be prioritized.”

Concerns Over Service Disruptions

Padubidri further pointed out that this incident marks the third significant disruption involving Air India Express flights within a single month, prompting questions about the airline’s reliability and aircraft maintenance protocols. He emphasized the potential safety risks associated with recurring technical issues, stating, “If an aircraft continues to have technical problems, it indicates systemic negligence. Operating such flights puts passenger lives at unacceptable risk.”

In light of this incident, he has formally appealed to the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), urging them to implement strict measures against Air India Express.

Airline’s Response to the Incident

In response to the situation, an Air India Express spokesperson issued a statement acknowledging the delay due to a technical snag. The airline claimed to have provided full support to affected passengers, including hotel accommodations, refreshments, and options for complimentary rescheduling or refunds.

The spokesperson concluded the statement with an apology and reassured passengers, saying, “We regret the inconvenience caused and reiterate that the safety of our guests and crew remains our highest priority.”

As scrutiny over airline operational practices and passenger rights continues to grow, this incident underscores the need for greater transparency during technical delays and improved accommodations during lengthy service disruptions.
