American Airlines Announces Major Route Changes at LaGuardia Airport

American Airlines (AA) has unveiled a significant realignment of its flight routes at LaGuardia Airport (LGA), introducing four new connections while discontinuing seven others. This strategic move aims to enhance its presence in the competitive New York market, especially following the termination of its Northeast Alliance with JetBlue (B6).

The new routes, which include flights to Atlanta (ATL), Charleston (CHS), Madison (MSN), and Fort Lauderdale (FLL), will commence in September 2025. Meanwhile, operations to Cincinnati (CVG), Dayton (DAY), and five additional destinations will be phased out as part of the airline’s ongoing network optimization.

New Route Additions at LaGuardia Airport

American Airlines is set to launch four exciting new routes from LaGuardia Airport starting in September 2025:

  • Atlanta (ATL): Beginning September 3, AA will resume flights to Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (ATL) with six daily flights using Embraer E175 aircraft. This route has a daily passenger volume of approximately 2,644 and an average round-trip fare of $516, with Delta Air Lines holding a 50% market share.

  • Charleston (CHS): Also starting September 3, American will restore year-round service to Charleston International Airport (CHS) with two daily flights, increasing to three in November. The airline will operate this route using Embraer E170 and E175 regional jets, previously discontinued in April 2020. Delta currently dominates this market with a 71% share.

  • Madison (MSN): In a fresh market entry, American will introduce daily service to Dane County Regional Airport (MSN) on September 3, utilizing Embraer E175 aircraft. This market generates about 90 daily passengers with high average fares of $1,033 round-trip, where Delta holds an 81% market share.

  • Fort Lauderdale (FLL): Starting November 2, AA will launch twice-daily seasonal service to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) using Boeing 737-800 aircraft. This route has a strong demand with 1,838 daily passengers and an average round-trip fare of $517. The competition is relatively balanced, with Delta, JetBlue, and Spirit Airlines sharing the market.

Routes Being Discontinued

As part of this route optimization strategy, American Airlines will discontinue seven routes from LaGuardia Airport, likely by September 2025:

  • Cincinnati (CVG): Currently, American holds a 22% market share on this route with 366 daily passengers and average fares of $515 round-trip.

  • Dayton (DAY): Despite maintaining a 52% market share, American is exiting this smaller market due to low demand, generating only 53 daily passengers.

  • Knoxville (TYS): American currently has a 32% market share with 163 daily passengers and average fares of $690.

  • Louisville (SDF): This route sees 227 daily passengers, with American holding a 36% market share.

  • Minneapolis (MSP): With 561 daily passengers and average fares of $795, American’s 16% market share does not justify continued operation.

  • Omaha (OMA): American holds a 28% market share with 188 daily passengers and high average fares of $804.

  • Sarasota/Bradenton (SRQ): American has just a 14% market share in this seasonal market.

Strategic Focus on Northeast Market

According to American’s Chief Strategy Officer, Steve Johnson, the airline is committed to competing aggressively in New York and Boston, even after the dissolution of its Northeast Alliance with JetBlue. Johnson highlighted that American has added over 20 new routes from LGA and JFK leveraging the slots returned after the NEA ended.

This strategic approach involves a mix of high-yield business routes (like Atlanta and Madison) along with leisure destinations (Charleston and Fort Lauderdale), while discontinuing routes where competition against dominant carriers is too strong.

In addition to the changes at LaGuardia, American Airlines is enhancing its network at Washington Reagan National Airport (DCA) with new service to Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) starting September 3, offering three daily flights using Embraer E175 aircraft.
