Ethiopian Airlines Considers Major Regional Jet Order Amidst Delivery Delays
Ethiopian Airlines is on the verge of making a significant move in the aviation market by potentially placing a double-digit order for regional jets. CEO Mesfin Tasew Bekele confirmed to Reuters during the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Annual General Meeting (AGM) that the airline is evaluating options for at least 20 new regional or small jets.

"We are receiving airplanes from both Boeing and Airbus, but deliveries have been delayed—some by three months, others by six months, and even longer," Bekele stated in the interview.
Current Fleet and Future Plans
Ethiopian Airlines already has a robust order book with both Boeing and Airbus. The fleet expansions include:
- 11 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners
- 8 Boeing 777-9s
- 11 Airbus A350-900s
In addition to fleet expansion, Ethiopian Airlines recently launched a new passenger service to Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on June 1, 2025. This service, operating four times a week, marks the airline’s second destination in the UAE, further enhancing connectivity between Africa and the Middle East.

"We are truly delighted to connect our passengers to an additional getaway in the UAE with our new flights to Sharjah. We have been connecting the UAE and Africa for nearly five decades now, and the new service will help boost investment, tourism, diplomatic, and socioeconomic bonds between the two regions," Bekele commented.
