Air India Halts Washington-Delhi Flights Due to Fleet Shortage Issues
Air India has made the decision to suspend its Delhi-Washington DC route, citing a projected shortfall in its fleet and ongoing airspace restrictions over Pakistan.
The announcement was made on August 11, 2025, with the service set to end on September 1, 2025. The airline stated this decision ensures the reliability and integrity of Air India’s overall route network.
Fleet Shortfall and Retrofitting
The airline explained that the suspension is mainly due to the planned shortfall in its fleet, as Air India initiated a retrofitting program for 26 of its Boeing 787-8 aircraft last month.
“This comprehensive retrofit initiative, designed to greatly enhance customer experience, requires many aircraft to be unavailable simultaneously until at least the end of 2026,” noted an Air India spokesperson.
Impact of Airspace Closure
Moreover, the continued closure of Pakistan’s airspace is hampering long-haul operations, resulting in longer flight routes and increased operational challenges.
For those looking to travel to Washington, Air India recommends booking flights with stops in New York (JFK), Newark (EWR), Chicago, or San Francisco through interline partnerships with Alaska Airlines, United Airlines, and Delta Air Lines.
Current Non-Stop Services
Despite the suspension, Air India will maintain non-stop flights to six other destinations in North America, including Toronto and Vancouver in Canada.
Customers with existing bookings for travel to or from Washington after September 1, 2025, will receive notifications regarding alternative travel arrangements.
