Korean Air and Delta Introduce Remote Baggage Screening on Incheon-Atlanta Route
Traveling across the Pacific is about to become more seamless, thanks to the collaboration between Korean Air and Delta Air Lines. Their joint venture aims to enhance the experience for passengers flying from Incheon International Airport (ICN) to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL).
The initiative, known as the International Remote Baggage Screening (IRBS), allows for X-ray screenings of luggage to be sent from Seoul to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) for remote examination prior to the arrival of flights in the United States.
By adopting this technology, travelers will no longer need to retrieve and check their bags again upon reaching the U.S. Korean Air estimates that this will cut connecting times by approximately 20 minutes and alleviate one of the most stressful aspects of international travel.
Enhanced Connections for Passengers
Korean Air emphasizes that its customers will enjoy smoother travel connections, particularly at ATL, recognized as the busiest airport globally in 2024. This development also means passengers won’t have to stand in lines for baggage rechecking or customs; their checked bags will automatically head to the final destination.
Upon landing at their first U.S. entry point, travelers can proceed directly to their connecting flights without delays.
Comprehensive Benefits of IRBS
This baggage screening process applies not only to those flying nonstop from ICN to ATL but also to passengers embarking on journeys from other locations who connect via Incheon Airport.
With approximately 300,000 passengers traveling the route from Incheon to Atlanta annually, the impact of IRBS is expected to be substantial. More than half of these individuals typically connect to additional flights through Atlanta. In 2024, about 67,000 of the 123,000 Korean Air passengers and over 100,000 of the 160,000 Delta travelers transitioned through Atlanta Airport.
Kwangho Ko, Senior Vice President at Korean Air, stated, “Together with Delta and our partners, we are introducing new initiatives to deliver a seamless passenger experience.” He further expressed the airline’s commitment to enhancing convenience and comfort for travelers.
