IndiGo Introduces Two Exciting European Destinations with Boeing 787
MUMBAI— IndiGo Airlines, the largest low-cost carrier in India, is gearing up for its most extensive long-haul expansion yet with the introduction of new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners. This development will enhance connections from Mumbai (BOM) and Delhi (DEL) to Europe, featuring new flights to London Heathrow (LHR) and Copenhagen (CPH), as noted by aviation analyst Ravreet Singh.
This strategy positions Amsterdam (AMS) as a primary hub, while other routes to Manchester (MAN), Copenhagen (CPH), and London Heathrow (LHR) ensure a blend of both popular and niche destinations. The airline’s growth aligns with the arrival of additional 787 aircraft.


IndiGo’s Expanding European Reach
Currently, IndiGo operates a wet-leased Boeing 787-9 for long-haul routes from Mumbai to Manchester and Amsterdam, with each route running three times weekly. This initiative paves the way for widebody operations, marking a calculated venture into the European market.
With a second 787 set to arrive in September 2025, the frequency of flights will increase, leading to six weekly trips to Amsterdam and four to Manchester. The arrival of a third aircraft in October will further elevate service, making Mumbai-Amsterdam flights daily and launching Mumbai-Copenhagen thrice weekly.
Significantly, by mid-October 2025, a fourth Dreamliner will be added, allowing for daily services from Delhi to London Heathrow and three times weekly to Amsterdam. Meanwhile, service to Amsterdam from Mumbai will decrease to four times per week, as stated by Singh.
The arrival of a fifth Dreamliner in November 2025 will include Delhi-Copenhagen and Delhi-Manchester routes, as well as additional flights to Amsterdam.
Looking ahead, a sixth and final aircraft from this batch is expected in January 2026. It is initially anticipated to serve popular leisure destinations such as Phuket and Bali, before transitioning service to Europe.


Amsterdam: The Central Hub
Ravreet emphasizes that Amsterdam (AMS) will serve as the central hub for IndiGo’s long-haul network. Its strategic position and partnerships with airlines like KLM and Virgin Atlantic ensure smooth connections throughout Europe and North America.
Manchester (MAN) and Copenhagen (CPH) are regarded as niche but promising routes, catering to point-to-point passengers while allowing connections through airline collaborations.
London Heathrow (LHR) represents a significant step for IndiGo as it enters a highly competitive market, directly competing with established full-service carriers.


Balanced Growth Strategy
Singh’s analysis reveals IndiGo’s prudent strategy. Each aircraft delivery is timed with market introductions, allowing the airline to analyze data and fine-tune capacity. This method prevents the oversaturation of emerging routes.
By early 2026, IndiGo’s Boeing 787-9 network will cover Amsterdam, Manchester, Copenhagen, and London Heathrow.
Seasonal routes to leisure spots like Phuket (HKT) and Bali (DPS) will add diversity to routes.


Challenges Ahead
A potential challenge for IndiGo lies in optimizing westbound flight routes. Future Delhi departures could see improvements if Pakistan’s airspace opens to Indian airlines by late 2025.
Current detours increase both travel time and fuel consumption, potentially affecting costs and passenger satisfaction.
Additionally, regulatory approvals, flight slots at airports, and agreements between nations remain vital for successful operations. However, IndiGo’s phased approach reflects its willingness to adapt as conditions evolve.
