Austrian Airlines Expands Winter Services to Dubai with Extra Capacity
Austrian Airlines has officially revealed its plans to resume flights to Dubai, utilizing Airbus A320neo aircraft. This new service will commence on December 1, 2025, and will continue through March 2026.
The airline will operate a five-weekly nonstop connection between its base in Vienna (VIE) and Dubai International Airport (DXB). Initially, this route is set for a three-month period, as Austrian Airlines views it as a commercial experiment, referring to it as a ‘Winter trial.’
This initiative allows Austrian Airlines to maximize its available capacity during the winter months. CEO Annette Mann shared insights in the press release that accompanied the announcement:
“An aircraft in the air is always better than one on the ground – and at the same time, we want to offer our guests a compelling deal. We understand this route comes with strong and very comfortable competition. But by deploying aircraft that would otherwise be idle during winter, we can afford to take a bold step, try something new, and challenge the market.”
The flight schedule has been crafted to operate mainly during European night hours. Passengers traveling to Dubai will depart from Vienna at 18:55, arriving in Dubai at 3:40 AM. The return flight will take off from Dubai at 6:05 AM and reach Vienna at 9:25 AM (all times local).
Austrian Airlines is promoting this route with attractive pricing, featuring roundtrip fares starting at €314 under the tagline ‘Dubai Deal.’
Interestingly, the airline has opted for the narrowbody Airbus A320neo, which accommodates 180 passengers, rather than utilizing a wider aircraft. This strategy aligns Austrian Airlines with a growing trend among various airlines, including airBaltic, ITA Airways, Aegean Airlines, and Wizz Air, who are also employing narrowbody planes for routes between Europe and Dubai.

Set to begin on July 1, 2025, the daily flights aim to meet rising travel demand while maintaining affordable prices. The airline will utilize Boeing 787-9 aircraft and has secured necessary slots for this route. Additionally, IndiGo plans to expand its fleet by wet-leasing two Boeing 787-9s from Norse Atlantic Airways. Strong demand from Indian cities, particularly Mumbai and Delhi, supports this new venture, potentially leading to more European destinations in the future.
Air India and IndiGo Need 16,800 Pilots Over Next Decade
The Indian aviation sector is set to experience a significant demand for pilots, with IndiGo needing over 11,000 pilots and Air India anticipating around 5,870 in the next decade. Other airlines like SpiceJet and Air India Express also forecast substantial staffing needs. Despite this growing demand, Minister Murlidhar Mohol assured that there is no current shortage of trained pilots. The high costs of pilot training raised concerns among the Airlines Pilots’ Association of India, as factors like aviation fuel and specialized training contribute to expenses. As the industry expands, aspiring pilots face challenges but also promising career opportunities.
Air India Plans New Aircraft Maintenance Training Center in Bengaluru
Air India, under Tata Group, is launching a new Basic Aircraft Maintenance Engineering (AME) Training Organization to enhance aviation skills in India. The four-year program, certified by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), will be based in a state-of-the-art training facility in Bengaluru, set to open in mid-2026. This program includes two years of academic training followed by hands-on experience at Air India’s upcoming MRO facility. The initiative aims to meet Air India’s expansion needs and is part of its Vihaan.AI transformation strategy, promoting a sustainable aviation ecosystem and creating skilled maintenance engineers for the industry.
