Asia’s Biggest International Airport Set to Open Next Month

NOIDA- The Noida International Airport (DXN) in Jewar, recognized as Asia’s largest airport, is set to officially open on October 30. Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu confirmed that commercial flights are anticipated to commence within 45 days of the inauguration.

This pivotal launch will connect at least ten cities, marking it as the second substantial airport in the National Capital Region, following Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL).

During an event at Hindon Airport (HDO) in Ghaziabad, Naidu indicated that preparations are in full swing. Airlines like IndiGo (6E) and Akasa Air (QP) have solidified their intentions to operate flights, with discussions on routes to Mumbai (BOM), Hyderabad (HYD), and Kolkata (CCU).

Noida Airport to Be Inaugurated on October 30

The development spans 1,334 hectares, with the project unfolding in phases. The initial phase includes a single 3,900-meter runway and a terminal designed to handle up to 12 million passengers per year.

Ultimately, the airport aims to expand across four phases, accommodating as many as 70 million passengers annually.

In its first year, officials project around six million passengers. Key infrastructure is nearing completion, with the runway and control tower ready, terminal construction finished, and essential systems such as baggage handling and e-gates installed. Final interior touches are underway.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) license is the last essential requirement before beginning flight operations.

Yamuna International Airport Pvt Ltd (YIAPL), the airport’s concessionaire, has reported that technical installations are making steady progress. Operational Readiness and Transition (ORAT) trials are taking place, which include simulations and testing of baggage systems.

Airlines and Route Planning

Airlines are finalizing their operations at Jewar. IndiGo (6E) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in November 2023 to become the launch carrier, following a validation flight in December.

Akasa Air (QP), having begun its operations in 2022, has also committed to establishing a significant presence at the airport.

The initial routes will link Jewar with key domestic centers, including Mumbai (BOM), Hyderabad (HYD), and Kolkata (CCU). The first phase will ensure connections to at least ten cities, with plans for further expansion as infrastructure and demand grow.

Cargo and Strategic Role

In addition to passenger travel, the airport is being developed as a significant cargo hub for northern India.

Its prime location near the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway and Dedicated Freight Corridor bolsters its prospects as a central logistics node.

Officials envision this role solidifying Jewar’s importance within India’s expanding air cargo landscape.

Passenger-Centric Initiatives

Naidu announced additional enhancements for airports across India. Within two months, free WiFi will be accessible at all airports, alongside plans for libraries and dedicated children’s areas to roll out in three months.

These initiatives are aimed at significantly enriching the passenger experience at both large and regional airports.

Hindon Airport Expansion

At the same event, Naidu revealed advancements at Hindon Airport (HDO), which now connects 16 cities since its commercial launch in October 2019. Present destinations encompass Kolkata (CCU), Chennai (MAA), Goa (GOI), Bengaluru (BLR), and Jammu (IXJ).

However, the terminal is experiencing congestion, with only two aircraft parking bays available, causing delays during service interruptions.

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has sought nine hectares of additional land from the Uttar Pradesh government to facilitate an increase in terminal capacity and expand parking bays.
