Vietnam Airlines Considers 30 A350s or 787-9s: Airbus vs. Boeing Debate

Vietnam Airlines has unveiled an exciting initiative to enhance its fleet by potentially acquiring up to 30 Airbus A350-900 or Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft. This officially marks the airline’s entry into the aviation market for new acquisitions.

On September 22, 2025, Vietnam Airlines reached out to interested entities, indicating a desire to expand its widebody jet fleet with deliveries scheduled between 2028 and 2030.

The airline is receptive to various arrangements, including purchases, leases, or subleases. This flexibility opens the door for prospective partners to contribute to the airline’s growth strategy.

Vietnam Airlines has set a deadline of October 8, 2025, for interested parties to submit their proposals. They encourage submissions to include essential details like the number and type of aircraft offered, delivery timelines, cabin configurations, and any available commercial terms, such as pricing or lease rates.

The announcement was formalized by several key figures at the airline, including Deputy Director Huynh Thanh Lan, Deputy General Manager Nguyen Thu Phuong, and Executive Vu Ngoc Chau My.

In the past, Vietnam Airlines has outlined its ambitious fleet-building objectives aimed at significantly enhancing operational capabilities by 2040.

Earlier in April 2025, the airline secured financial backing from Vietcombank through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to acquire 50 narrowbody aircraft. Simultaneously, a deal was made with CitiBank for $560 million to support its fleet expansion endeavors.

As reported, Vietnam Airlines currently has an extensive fleet that includes Airbus A320neos, A321neos, A321-200s, A350-900s, and both Boeing 787s and 787-10s. They are also on track to receive two additional Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners.
