Asia’s Biggest Airport Set to Begin International Flights by H1 2026

DELHI- Noida International Airport (DXN), located in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh, is set to begin operations this December. This new facility will serve as the second major aviation hub for the National Capital Region.

The airport will start with domestic flights and is expected to introduce international routes in the first half of 2026, according to CEO Christoph Schnellmann.

This Greenfield Airport will initially offer a limited daytime flight schedule, with plans to expand to full operations once safety protocols and system checks are finalized.

Airlines including IndiGo (6E), Air India Express (IX), and Akasa Air (QP) will provide the initial services, while air traffic control will be managed by the Airports Authority of India and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

The DGCA has commenced calibration flights to test crucial systems, such as air navigation aids and runway lighting, ahead of granting the operational license.

These tests are vital for Noida International Airport (DXN) to officially begin commercial operations later this year.

Like other new airports across India, Noida International Airport will adopt a phased rollout strategy. For example, Goa’s Mopa Airport (GOX) kicked off domestic flights in early 2023 and added international services six months later.

Prioritizing Passenger Safety and Operational Efficiency

Schnellmann has highlighted that the primary focus will be on delivering a reliable, safe, and efficient flight experience. “We will initiate our operations with domestic flights during the day,” he explained. “As we ensure stability, we’ll move to a 24-hour operation, gearing up for international flights in 2026.”

This cautious approach aims to reduce operational risks, allowing systems, equipment, and personnel to adapt before ramping up services.

The transition to comprehensive operations will follow the global Operational Readiness and Airport Transfer (ORAT) process. This internationally recognized standard helps validate the airport’s readiness across various functions.

Preparing for Global Connectivity

With the onset of international flights, Noida International Airport (DXN) aims to enhance air connectivity within North India, complementing the existing Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) in Delhi.

The initial terminal is equipped to handle approximately 12 million passengers each year, with an expected 6 million travelers in its first operational year.

Schnellmann emphasized that the airport’s adaptable design allows for swift expansion as demand increases. “We predict full capacity will be reached within a few years,” he remarked, reflecting on the rising air travel demand in India.
