Izham Ismail Resigns as Head of Malaysia Aviation Group

Malaysia Aviation Group has announced that Izham Ismail, the long-serving Group Managing Director, will retire at the beginning of 2026 after nearly five decades with the airline. This transition concludes a distinguished 47-year career for Ismail at Malaysia Airlines, coming at a time when the airline group is experiencing renewed financial stability.

Izham is set to step down on January 31, 2026. In his place, Captain Nasaruddin Bakar, who is currently the Chief Operating Officer of Malaysia Airlines, will take on the newly formed role of Group Chief Executive Officer and President. This position will expand responsibilities across both the airline and non-airline sectors of the company.

Nasaruddin brings over 30 years of experience with Malaysia Airlines, having served in various operational and strategic capacities. According to Malaysia Aviation Group, he possesses a deep understanding of the company’s structure, culture, and long-term objectives. As Group CEO and President, he will be responsible for implementing strategic priorities such as operational enhancements, customer experience initiatives, and long-term growth strategies for the organization.

Leadership Amid Crisis

Izham began his journey with Malaysia Airlines in 1979 as a pilot and climbed through various management roles in flight operations, fleet management, and corporate leadership. He assumed the position of Group Managing Director in December 2017, during a challenging time characterized by financial instability and significant restructuring efforts. This period was marked by crises involving Flight MH370 and MH17, which heavily impacted the company. His leadership has been vital in stabilizing the organization and steering it toward profitability.

Under his management, the Malaysia Aviation Group undertook a fleet restructuring, streamlined operations, and concentrated on enhancing financial health. Efforts included a multi-year transformation plan, renegotiation of aircraft leases, cost-cutting measures, and a reorganization of business units. Furthermore, Malaysia Airlines strengthened its partnerships with Asian carriers and improved regional connectivity as travel demand started to rise again post-COVID-19 pandemic.

Izham was a prominent figure during the COVID crisis, as travel restrictions and reduced passenger volumes severely affected the airline sector. Malaysia Aviation Group highlighted that the company’s recent return to profitability is a direct result of long-term restructuring efforts and a more disciplined operational strategy guided by his leadership. Although updated financial targets for 2026 have yet to be released, the leadership transition takes place as travel markets in Asia are on the mend.

Nasaruddin steps into the top role as Malaysia Airlines strives to sustain its improved financial position while progressing with modernization initiatives. The airline is assessing its future fleet needs, investing in digital systems, and upgrading customer experiences as part of its long-term vision. Malaysia Aviation Group has stated that Nasaruddin will oversee these initiatives while also enhancing the group’s broader portfolio, which includes cargo services, aviation support, and customer loyalty programs.

Transition Already Underway

No additional executive changes have been announced in connection with this transition. Malaysia Aviation Group indicated that the leadership handover process has already begun, with both Izham and Nasaruddin preparing for a smooth transfer of responsibilities.

Malaysia Airlines operates a fleet comprising both Airbus and Boeing aircraft, offering regional and long-haul services centered around Kuala Lumpur. It remains one of Southeast Asia’s key network airlines, steadily restoring international traffic levels following pandemic-related setbacks. Malaysia Aviation Group also oversees a variety of aviation-related businesses beyond the airline, including engineering, ground handling, and logistics services.
