How a Fake Pilot Flew Passengers Across Europe: The Shocking Reveal

An airline pilot associated with Avion Express (X9) was discovered to have used counterfeit credentials to fly as a captain throughout Europe. This individual operated commercial flights for various partner airlines, including Eurowings (EW), while departing from major hubs like Frankfurt (FRA). He had previously held a first officer position with Garuda Indonesia (GA).

His fraudulent captain credentials allowed him to evade simulator checks and essential experience criteria for several months. It wasn’t until a routine audit that the deception came to light.

How the Fake Pilot Deceived Airlines

An internal investigation identified the pilot, referred to as LAB, as lacking the necessary qualifications for the captain role. He created false documentation after serving solely as a co-pilot at Garuda Indonesia (GA).

These forged records enabled him to pass captain approval at Avion Express (X9), a company that provides aircraft and crew mostly on a wet-lease basis throughout Europe.

Because the wet-lease operations utilize the brand and schedules of associated airlines, LAB managed to serve passengers without raising suspicion.

His bogus qualifications evaded scrutiny for several months, leading to heightened concerns about the validation protocols in place across the aviation sector. The fraud was revealed during a scheduled documentation review, long after he had completed numerous flight rotations.

Avion Express confirmed the incident, stating that the pilot is no longer with the company. They initiated an internal investigation after receiving suspicions about his credentials. The airline emphasized its commitment to regulatory compliance and safety in its hiring procedures.

Eurowings (EW) acknowledged that the pilot had flown on their behalf through Avion Express. They stated that their safety experts are currently examining the case, but further information has not been disclosed.

A United Airlines (UA) flight attendant was found to have lived under a stolen identity for 23 years. Ricardo Cesar Guedes, originally from Brazil, took on the identity of a deceased American child, William Ericson Ladd.
