Flydubai Chooses GEnx-1B Engines for 2023 Boeing 787 Orders
flydubai has chosen the GE Aerospace GEnx-1B engine to power its forthcoming fleet of Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, which the airline ordered during the 2023 Dubai Airshow.
Two years later, at Dubai Airshow 2025, flydubai and GE Aerospace finalized a significant 60-engine agreement. This deal encompasses spare engines and a long-term service commitment to support the carrier’s entry into long-haul operations.
flydubai’s adoption of the 787-9 model marks its first venture into widebody aircraft after exclusively operating with a fleet of Boeing 737s.
On November 17, 2025, Ghaith Al Ghaith, CEO of flydubai, expressed, “The performance and durability of our engines play a crucial role in the success of our operations and fleet expansion plans, especially as we prepare to welcome the Boeing 787 aircraft to our fleet in the coming years. We look forward to a long and successful partnership with GE Aerospace as we embark on the next chapter of growth.”
According to flydubai, the GEnx engine currently powers approximately two-thirds of all Boeing 787 aircraft in service. The airline also considered the Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 turbofan as an alternative for its 787-9s.
Russell Stokes, President and CEO of Commercial Engines and Services at GE Aerospace, stated, “We are honored by flydubai’s trust and confidence in GE Aerospace technology as the airline enters its next phase of growth. The GEnx engines will deliver reliability, efficiency, and durability to power the airline’s first widebody fleet. We are excited to help propel flydubai’s expansion plans.”
Flydubai emphasized that this engine order highlights its “confidence in GE Aerospace’s proven technology solutions, which offer best-in-class performance, durability, and fuel efficiency.”
Speculation surrounds the possibility that flydubai might also make additional aircraft orders from both Airbus and Boeing at Dubai Airshow 2025.
