American Airlines Drops First Class, Upgrades 777 with New Business Suites
FORT WORTH- American Airlines (AA) has dispatched its inaugural Boeing 777-300ER to Hong Kong (HKG) for cabin retrofitting. This upgrade includes new business class suites featuring doors and an improved premium economy offering.
This initiative marks the launch of Project Olympus, the airline’s long-awaited overhaul of its fleet interiors.
The retrofit will remove first class seating while boosting the number of premium seats without compromising coach capacity.
This change comes in response to the rising demand for premium long-haul travel on significant international routes.


New Business Suites on American Airlines’ 777-300ER
American Airlines plans to transform its 20 Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, shifting from a layout containing 8 first class, 52 business class, 24 premium economy, and 216 coach seats to one featuring 70 business class, 44 premium economy, and 216 coach seats.
This redesign boosts the premium seat count from 84 to 114, resulting in a net gain of 30 seats, while only removing the 8 first class seats.
This premium-oriented configuration positions the 777-300ER to become the airline’s most valuable long-haul cabin.
Aviation expert JonNYC noted the configuration for the retrofitting aircraft, specifically identifying N718AN as the first undergoing changes.
As reported by reputable sources, the launch indicates a positive rebound from earlier delays caused by supplier issues since the announcement of the retrofit program in September 2022.


Cabin Enhancements and Passenger Experience
The revamped business class will feature suites equipped with sliding doors, a modern entertainment system, and enhanced privacy options.
This redesign offers slightly less personal space per seat, but significantly boosts enclosed cabin comfort and personal storage capabilities.
Upgrades in premium economy will include wider shells, improved cushioning, revamped headrests, and better power and device ports.
Coach seating remains unchanged with 216 seats, ensuring that economy capacity is maintained despite the focus on expanding premium offerings.


Retrofit Timeline and Routes
Project Olympus is not limited to just the Boeing 777-300ER. American Airlines plans to reconfigure its Boeing 777-200 fleet as well.
This retrofit signifies the conclusion of American’s Flagship First Class. The airline has typically utilized this product on Airbus A321T transcontinental flights and specific 777-300ER routes, such as those to London Heathrow and Sydney.
The Airbus A321T will be replaced by A321XLR aircraft configured for standard domestic service, which will likewise eliminate first class seating from that fleet.
Once the upgrades for all 777-300ERs are complete, the new business class suite will emerge as American Airlines’ premier international in-flight product, highlighting a significant shift from ultra-luxurious first class to high-value business travel and enhanced premium economy options.
