BRISBANE- Virgin Australia (VA) will reinstate direct flights between Sydney (SYD) and Darwin (DRW) starting June 22, 2026. The airline will offer up to seven round trips per week during peak times, totaling around 80,000 available seats per year.

Virgin Australia Reinstates Darwin Flights

Virgin Australia had previously paused year-round services between Sydney (SYD) and Darwin (DRW) in early 2023 as part of a network evaluation.

With a renewed focus on enhancing service to meet customer demand, the airline is set to bring back this popular route, including the shift to daytime operations.

The flights will operate from Darwin International Airport (DRW), a vital gateway in the Northern Territory. Currently, Virgin Australia provides services to three destinations in the NT: Darwin (DRW), Alice Springs (ASP), and Uluru (AYQ). These routes play a significant role in boosting regional tourism and economic development.

Alistair Hartley, Virgin Australia’s Chief Strategy and Transformation Officer, reiterated the significance of this route. “We’re thrilled to be reconnecting Sydney and Darwin, two key destinations in Australia’s vibrant tourism landscape,” Mr. Hartley commented.

He added, “With this route’s return, passengers will have more travel options, encouraging competition and strengthening the ties between metropolitan and regional Australia, particularly with Darwin as a central hub.”

This reinstatement will also facilitate easier travel for those visiting family and friends while providing a tourism boost for both cities.

Government Support and Economic Impact

Robyn Cahill OAM, the Northern Territory Minister for Trade, Business, and Asian Relations, expressed her approval of Virgin Australia’s plans to resume direct flights between Darwin (DRW) and Sydney (SYD).

“Territorians have been asking for more aviation routes and affordable options, so today’s announcement is fantastic news,” she stated.

According to Ms. Cahill, this service aligns with the requests for additional daytime flights, improving travel flexibility.

The government is dedicated to sustainably enhancing the Territory’s aviation sector while boosting connectivity and competition for residents and visitors.

This new route reinforces the bonds between New South Wales and Northern Territory, supporting tourism growth and providing desirable daytime travel options in both directions.

Service Schedule and Operational Highlights

The flights will be available seasonally to accommodate demand, running from June 22, 2026, until January 10, 2027, with a restart planned for March 2027.

All Virgin Australia departures are scheduled during daylight hours to enhance traveler convenience and comfort.

The airline promises competitive pricing on this route, with online bookings available starting December 10, 2025.
