Finnair Set to Introduce Flights to Melbourne in 2026: A Historic First for Australia
Finnair has announced its exciting plans to launch flights to Melbourne in autumn 2026. This will mark the airline’s inaugural entry into the Australian market.
The new route, connecting Melbourne directly to Finnair’s global network via Helsinki, represents a significant expansion for the airline.
Enhancing Global Connectivity
“Connecting Helsinki and Melbourne allows us to provide a unique link between the northern and southern hemispheres,” stated Christine Rovelli, Finnair’s Chief Revenue Officer. She noted that the new route is likely to attract European travelers heading to Australia, as well as Australians seeking to explore northern Europe and beyond.
Daily Flights on Modern Aircraft
The daily flights will operate via Bangkok, utilizing an Airbus A350 for the journey. Departing from Helsinki shortly after midnight, the flight will arrive in Bangkok by afternoon, taking a brief stop before continuing to Melbourne the following morning.
Return trips are scheduled to leave Melbourne in the afternoon, with an evening stop in Bangkok, arriving back in Helsinki early the next day. This schedule aligns well with Finnair’s existing morning departures across Europe.
Booking and Future Network
Passengers will be able to book the Melbourne flights starting December 18, 2025, with the inaugural flight anticipated on October 25, 2026, depending on approval from the Australian government.
In addition to Melbourne, Finnair’s 2026 network will feature 93 destinations in Europe, 11 in Asia, seven in North America—including the new route to Toronto launching in summer 2026—and two destinations in the Middle East.
