Ethiopian Airlines Expands Fleet with Nine New Boeing 787-9 Aircraft
Ethiopian Airlines has announced an order for nine more Boeing 787-9 aircraft, as revealed by the U.S. manufacturer. This order was officially disclosed on January 20, 2026, but was reportedly finalized in December 2025, shortly after the Dubai Airshow.
At the Dubai Airshow, Ethiopian Airlines also firmed up an order for 11 Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft and acquired eight Airbus A350s. Of the A350s, six were directly purchased from the European manufacturer, while two were secured through a partnership with leasing firm Novus Aviation Capital.
This recent order follows an earlier commitment from the airline, which had placed an order for 11 787s and 20 737 MAX jets during the 2023 Dubai Airshow. It remains unclear whether any options from that previous order are being exercised with the newly announced nine-aircraft order.
Mesfin Tasew, the CEO of Ethiopian Airlines Group, emphasized in a press release that the airline is committed to acquiring more aircraft and integrating the latest technologies as part of its strategic vision for sustainable aviation’s future.
As of January 2026, Ethiopian Airlines boasts the largest fleet of Dreamliners in Africa, comprising 30 aircraft, 20 of which are the –8 variant and 10 are of the –9 version. The airline’s widebody fleet is further complemented by 11 Boeing 777s and 25 Airbus A350s of various types.
