Army Officer’s Aggressive Behavior Endangers SpiceJet Staff at Srinagar Airport

SRINAGAR- Last week, a serious confrontation took place at Srinagar Airport (SXR) involving a senior Indian Army officer and staff from SpiceJet, resulting in injuries to two employees.

SpiceJet described the incident as a “murderous assault” that arose from a disagreement regarding extra cabin baggage fees.

The officer, identified as Lt. Col. Ritesh Kumar Singh and stationed in Gulmarg, allegedly refused to pay the baggage charges and instead attacked the SpiceJet personnel. In response, the airline has registered a First Information Report (FIR) and is working towards placing the officer on India’s no-fly list.

Incident Details at Srinagar Airport

According to SpiceJet, this altercation occurred on July 26, 2025, when the officer attempted to board a flight with 16 kg of cabin baggage, exceeding the 7 kg limit.

When informed about the additional charges and requested to pay, the officer allegedly refused, bypassed security protocols, and attempted to access the aerobridge. A CISF official had to intervene to escort him back to the gate.

Upon reaching the gate, the situation escalated. The officer struck one employee with such force that the staff member lost consciousness.

The violence did not cease there. Another staff member who attempted to assist was also struck in the face, sustaining injuries to the nose and jaw.

SpiceJet confirmed that both wounded employees were taken to a medical facility, where one was diagnosed with a spinal fracture and the other with severe facial trauma.

Seeking Justice and Accountability

SpiceJet has formally reached out to the Ministry of Civil Aviation, urging strict action against the officer involved. The airline is also advocating for his inclusion on India’s no-fly list as per the protocols set by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

CCTV footage of the incident has been provided to law enforcement, and an FIR has been filed as the investigation unfolds.

The carrier released a statement condemning the attack, articulating their commitment to pursue all legal and regulatory options available for accountability.

While the Indian Army has yet to provide an official statement, internal investigations are reportedly underway, and an inquiry has been initiated to understand the details surrounding the incident at Srinagar Airport (SXR).

Response to Security Breach

Upon returning to the gate, CISF personnel were deployed to handle the situation. The two passengers were removed from the aircraft and turned over to local law enforcement.
