Etihad Airways Invests Nearly $1 Billion in Boeing Fleet Retrofit Program
Etihad Airways is making a significant move to enhance travel experiences by investing almost $1 billion in a comprehensive retrofit program for its older Boeing 777 and 787 Dreamliner fleets. This strategic initiative aims to ensure product consistency across the airline’s widebody fleet, ensuring that passengers receive the same high-quality service regardless of the aircraft they are on. With this upgrade, Etihad is positioning itself to provide a seamless travel experience, particularly as it navigates the challenges posed by delays in the Boeing 777X delivery schedule.
Enhancing Fleet Consistency with Boeing Retrofits
Antonoaldo Neves, CEO of Etihad Airways, confirmed the ambitious retrofit project during a recent interview with The National. He stressed the importance of maintaining uniformity across the fleet, with the exception of the Airbus A380s. Neves stated, "We’re going to retrofit even the planes that don’t need a retrofit because we believe it’s crucial for the airline to have consistency across the fleet."
The retrofit program will focus on upgrading approximately 50 Boeing aircraft, specifically nine B777-300ERs and 43 B787s. Key upgrades will include:
- New business class seats
- Updated in-flight entertainment (IFE) systems
- High-speed internet connectivity
These enhancements will ensure that passengers enjoy a consistent and high-quality experience across all aircraft, including the newly introduced Airbus A350-1000.
Delays in Boeing 777X Deliveries Impacting Retrofit Timeline
The timing of Etihad’s retrofit initiative has been influenced by ongoing delays in the delivery of the Boeing 777X. Initially expected to enter service in 2020, the introduction of the B777X has faced multiple postponements, with its debut now anticipated in 2026. As a result, Etihad has chosen to exclude this model from its five-year strategic plan, opting instead to remain flexible and consider acquiring additional Boeing 787 Dreamliners.
Future Fleet Expansion Plans for Etihad Airways
This retrofit initiative is part of a larger $7 billion investment plan that aims to expand Etihad Airways’ fleet from 102 to approximately 150 aircraft by 2030. The airline’s current order book includes:
- 20 Boeing 787-10s and 8 Boeing 787-9s
- 17 Boeing 777-9s and 8 Boeing 777-8s
- 15 Airbus A350-1000s and 7 A350 freighters
- 21 Airbus A320/321 narrowbody jets
Moreover, discussions are ongoing with both Airbus and Boeing regarding potential new widebody aircraft orders, reflecting Etihad’s commitment to growth and modernization.
