Hawaiian Airlines Announces Flight Reductions in Austin Post-Merger with Alaska Airlines

Hawaiian Airlines, now under the ownership of Alaska Airlines Group, is implementing significant changes to its flight routes, particularly impacting Austin (AUS) travelers. Following the merger finalized on September 18, 2024, Hawaiian Airlines has decided to cut its service from Austin to Honolulu (HNL), marking a notable shift in its operational strategy.

Hawaiian Airlines Cuts Austin Flights

The airline has confirmed that it will terminate its Honolulu-Austin service, with the last flight scheduled for March 26, 2025. This decision comes as part of a broader network optimization plan following the acquisition by Alaska Airlines Group. Initially launched in early 2021, the Austin route was designed to meet demand during the pandemic but has now become unsustainable.

• The final flight from Austin (AUS) to Honolulu (HNL) will operate on March 26, 2025.
• Current operations include three weekly flights using an Airbus A330-200, which will be reduced to twice-weekly flights in January 2025 before complete cessation.

This route change follows the discontinuation of Hawaiian’s Orlando (MCO) service in 2022, as the airline redirected its long-haul aircraft to restore international routes.

Network Changes Across Other Destinations

In addition to the Austin flight cuts, Hawaiian Airlines is making several other adjustments to its network. Starting April 22, the airline will introduce a second daily flight between Honolulu (HNL) and Seattle (SEA), enhancing connectivity between these two major cities.

• San Diego Route Adjustments: Hawaiian Airlines will cease its service between Kahului (OGG) and San Diego (SAN) effective June 12, 2025. Alaska Airlines will increase its offerings on this route by launching a second daily flight to maintain market capacity.

These changes reflect Hawaiian Airlines’ strategy to strengthen its presence at Alaska’s Seattle hub while allowing Alaska Airlines to take full control of the San Diego-Kahului market.
