Riyadh Air Launch May Be Delayed Until Q4 2025

Riyadh Air Launch Delayed: New Timeline and Strategic Partnerships

Riyadh Air, the ambitious new airline from Saudi Arabia, has postponed its planned operations yet again, now aiming for a launch in late 2025. Initially scheduled to resume in the second quarter, the timeline has shifted to the third quarter of 2025, and further delays are anticipated due to production holdups with the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. This unexpected delay is a significant development for Riyadh Air as it seeks to establish itself within the competitive aviation market.

Reasons Behind the Delay

The primary reason for the Riyadh Air launch delay is the production issues affecting the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Currently, seven Dreamliners are being manufactured at Boeing’s Charleston facility in South Carolina. The airline has chosen General Electric GEnX-1B engines to power its fleet, which is a critical component of its operational readiness.

Here are some details about the specific aircraft currently in production:

  • Line Numbers:
    1. 1265ZF04
    2. 1279ZF04
    3. 1284ZF04
    4. 1290ZF04
    5. 1300ZF04
    6. 1307ZF04
    7. 1312ZF04

With planes numbered 1234 to 1237 in the final assembly phase, Riyadh Air now anticipates receiving its first aircraft in the fourth quarter of 2025, though further delays into 2026 cannot be ruled out.

Training and Ground Handling Investments

To prepare for its operations, Riyadh Air has leased a 787-9 Dreamliner as a technical and spare aircraft, focusing on training its pilots, cabin crew, and engineering staff. Additionally, the airline has signed a SAR 500 million contract with Saudi Ground Services Company for ground handling services, which includes a three-year agreement with a two-year extension option.

Strategic Partnerships and Growth Plans

Despite the operational delays, Riyadh Air is actively pursuing strategic partnerships to solidify its future. Recently, CEO Tony Douglas led a delegation to India to explore potential airline partnerships in a market crucial to the airline’s growth strategy. This visit, scheduled for March 12-14, 2025, aims to establish connections in what is projected to be Saudi Arabia’s largest tourism source market by 2030.

The Saudi Tourism Authority aims to attract 7.5 million Indian visitors annually by the end of the decade. This follows a significant 50% increase in Indian travelers to Saudi Arabia in 2023, which exceeded 1.5 million, driven by strategic initiatives.

Building Important Connections

During the visit, the delegation will engage with officials from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Embassy of Saudi Arabia to secure necessary permissions for launching operations in India. Douglas is also expected to meet with major Indian airlines, including IndiGo and Air India, to discuss potential partnership opportunities.

“India has long been a crucial part of Riyadh Air’s network planning ahead of the launch of our operations,” stated Douglas. He emphasized the airline’s commitment to enhancing tourism and economic growth, while fostering connections between Saudi Arabia and India.

In line with these efforts, Riyadh Air has appointed Bird Travels as its exclusive distribution and sales partner in India. Bird Travels aims to enhance the visibility of Riyadh Air’s services and promote its offerings throughout the country.

Future Aspirations

Riyadh Air is set to serve over 100 destinations by 2030 as part of Saudi Arabia’s National Transport and Logistics Strategy and Vision 2030 goals. The airline is poised to contribute an additional $20 billion to Saudi Arabia’s non-oil GDP while creating over 200,000 jobs both locally and globally.
