Air India Express Launches Two New Saudi Routes
Air India Express Launches Direct Flights from Bengaluru and Tiruchirappalli to Dammam
BENGALURU – Air India Express, a subsidiary of the Tata Group, has announced an exciting expansion of its international operations with the introduction of non-stop flights connecting Bengaluru (BLR) and Tiruchirappalli (TRZ) to Dammam (DMM), Saudi Arabia. This new service, set to commence on January 1 and January 2, 2025, respectively, positions Air India Express as the first and only airline to provide direct flights between these Indian cities and Dammam, marking a significant milestone in its Middle Eastern expansion.
The launch of these new routes addresses the rising demand for direct connectivity between India and Saudi Arabia, particularly benefiting the Indian expatriate community in the Gulf region.

Bengaluru-Dammam Market Overview
The Bengaluru-Dammam route is primarily tailored for Visiting Friends and Relatives (VFR) traffic, catering to a significant number of Indian expatriates working in Saudi Arabia. This demographic, coupled with business travelers and pilgrims, has led to a substantial demand for direct flights. In the financial year 2023-24, the sector recorded over 43,000 flyers, showcasing the robust potential for these new services.
By being the sole airline operating direct flights on this route, Air India Express not only addresses immediate travel needs but also positions itself to cultivate a loyal customer base in a market with no direct competitors.
Strengthening Air India Express’s Middle East Network
The introduction of these new flights enhances Air India Express’s existing Middle Eastern network. The airline already services ten Indian airports from Dammam, including major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai. With Bengaluru and Tiruchirappalli becoming the 11th and 12th destinations, the airline is reinforcing its dedication to providing affordable and efficient air travel between India and the Gulf region.
Conclusion: A Strategic Move with Competitive Implications
Air India Express’s launch of direct flights between Bengaluru, Tiruchirappalli, and Dammam underscores its commitment to tapping into high-demand yet underserved markets. This strategic addition not only solidifies the airline’s presence in the Middle Eastern sector but also meets the growing needs of VFR and business travelers.
However, this development may prompt a competitive response from IndiGo, known for its quick adaptations to market changes. A recent example includes IndiGo’s announcement of services on the Bengaluru-Abu Dhabi route shortly after Air India Express’s launch. It will be interesting to see if IndiGo will consider entering the Bengaluru-Dammam market as well.
