IndiGo Airlines Marks Historic Test Flight at Navi Mumbai International Airport

MUMBAI – December 29, 2024, marks a significant milestone for the aviation sector as IndiGo Airlines successfully completed its maiden test flight at the newly constructed Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMI). This landmark event saw the IndiGo Airbus A320 touch down on Runway 08/26, a crucial step toward the airport’s operational launch.

In a demonstration of readiness, the flight, which took off from Mumbai Airport (BOM) at 12:28 PM, arrived at the new facility at 1:38 PM IST after conducting essential calibration tests. The aircraft, registered as VT-IFN, is an 11.7-year-old model powered by IAE engines.

IndiGo’s Historic Landing at Navi Mumbai International Airport

The successful test flight operated under the capable hands of Captain Karan Sahgal and Captain Rahul Jain. Arun Bansal, CEO of Adani Airports Holding Limited (AAHL), addressed attendees, emphasizing that discussions are ongoing with various airlines for both domestic and international services.

  • Navi Mumbai Airport Capacity:
    • Initial Operations: The southern runway (08/26) is designed to manage 50 aircraft movements daily.
    • Passenger Terminal: Terminal 1 will accommodate 20 million passengers annually.

Bansal also revealed plans for Terminal 2, which is projected to begin construction by mid-2025, with completion expected by the end of 2028 or early 2029. The entire airport, once fully operational, will be capable of handling nearly 90 million passengers across four integrated terminals.

Upcoming Launch Date for Navi Mumbai International Airport

The official inauguration of Navi Mumbai International Airport is scheduled for April 17, 2025. Domestic and cargo operations are set to commence on May 15, 2025, with international flights beginning in July 2025. Initial flight operations will likely be conducted by IndiGo Airlines and Akasa Air, with Air India and others expected to follow.

  • AIP Application: The airport plans to apply for the Airport Improvement Program (AIP) in February 2025, which will facilitate private and charter flight operations.

In its first year, Navi Mumbai Airport aims to manage approximately 13-14 million passengers, which includes 8-9 million domestic and 4-5 million international travelers. This new hub will alleviate congestion at Mumbai Airport (BOM), which is currently nearing its maximum capacity.

PAPI Lights Testing: A Key Development

In December 2024, the Airport Authority of India successfully conducted Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI) validation tests at Navi Mumbai International Airport. This system plays a vital role in guiding pilots during landing approaches, enhancing safety and efficiency as the airport prepares for its operational launch.

The AAI’s Flight Inspection Unit performed comprehensive day and night testing, confirming the effectiveness of the PAPI system, which features specialized red and white signal lights positioned alongside the runway.

IndiGo Airlines has also validated its simulator for Draft Required Navigation Performance approaches at both Navi Mumbai and Noida airports, showcasing its readiness for upcoming operations.
