Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan 2025: Exciting Upgrades Coming to Loyalty Program

SEATTLE – Alaska Airlines is gearing up to enhance its renowned Mileage Plan, widely recognized as the most generous loyalty program in the airline industry. Beginning January 2025, Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan members will benefit from accelerated paths to elite status, personalized rewards, and expanded opportunities for earning and redeeming miles on a global scale.

Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan Enhancements

Brett Catlin, the Vice President of Loyalty, Alliances, and Sales at Alaska Airlines, revealed a multi-year initiative aimed at upgrading the Mileage Plan during a recent announcement. The 2025 rollout promises a range of new perks, including innovative ways to earn elite status, even through award travel. Catlin also hinted at additional enhancements as Alaska Airlines works to integrate its loyalty platform with Hawaiian Airlines following their merger in September.

This merger not only allows members to transfer miles between Alaska and Hawaiian loyalty accounts at a 1:1 ratio without fees but also enables customers to purchase flights from both airlines through either website. Starting November 2024, Hawaii residents can look forward to exclusive discounts and benefits through a new travel program.

Milestone-Based Rewards System for 2025

The revamped Mileage Plan will introduce a milestone-based reward system, allowing members to unlock perks at various elite-qualifying mile (EQM) thresholds starting from just 10,000 EQMs. This system extends benefits to a broader range of members beyond those with elite status. Rewards at each milestone include:

  • Bonus miles
  • Lounge access
  • Temporary status upgrades
  • EQM rollovers
  • Access to exclusive events and experiences

Additional milestones are set at 30,000, 55,000, 85,000, 150,000, 200,000, and 250,000 EQMs, complementing the existing MVP and MVP Gold status levels.

New Ways to Earn Elite Qualifying Miles (EQMs)

Alaska Airlines is revolutionizing the way members can earn EQMs, making it easier to achieve elite status. Starting January 1, 2025, the airline will introduce several innovative methods for accumulating EQMs:

  • Members will earn at least 100% of flown miles when booking through alaskaair.com or the Alaska Airlines app.
  • Award travel redemptions will now count towards elite status, with EQMs credited beginning in spring 2025.
  • Alaska Airlines Visa® cardholders will earn one EQM for every $3 spent on eligible purchases, up to a maximum of 30,000 EQMs annually.
  • Non-airline partnerships will also contribute to EQMs, with members earning 1,000 EQMs for every 3,000 miles earned with eligible everyday travel partners, such as Lyft.

A new milestone option at 85,000 EQMs will allow members to roll over 10,000 EQMs to the next year, providing a head start on maintaining their status.

Expanding Global Partner Opportunities

Alaska Airlines boasts 30 domestic and international partner airlines, including oneworld Alliance members, offering access to over 1,200 destinations worldwide. The airline has simplified the mileage earning structure for global partners, allowing members to earn 100% of flown miles on bookings made through alaskaair.com with 23 direct partners. Premium cabin travel offers even greater rewards:

  • 150% mileage bonus for Premium Economy
  • 250% bonus for Business Class
  • Up to 350% bonus for International First Class

Additionally, multi-carrier redemptions will be introduced this winter, enabling members to combine flights from different partners for a single trip, starting with U.S.-Europe routes.

Exciting Extras and Future Enhancements

In 2025, Alaska Airlines will launch “Extras,” allowing members to redeem miles for exclusive experiences and events. The airline will also provide more Global Getaways, featuring seasonal discounts on international award redemptions. Since April, members have saved nearly 50 million miles through these promotional offers.

Significant changes to the upgrade system will take place later in 2025, prioritizing Million Milers within their tiers, followed by members ranked by earned EQMs, regardless of ticket price. MVP members’ companions will now be eligible for complimentary upgrades on the same reservation, ensuring an enhanced travel experience.
