Global Airlines Sends A380 to Portugal for Final Maintenance
Global Airlines Achieves Milestone with Airbus A380 Arrival in Portugal
Global Airlines, the ambitious UK startup, recently celebrated a significant achievement as its inaugural Airbus A380 landed in Beja, Portugal, on January 16, 2025. This milestone marks a crucial step in the airline’s vision for expanding its aviation operations. The A380, which previously served under China Southern Airlines, underwent extensive maintenance at EFW’s facility in Dresden, Germany, before its journey to Portugal.
The arrival of the superjumbo aircraft not only signifies Global Airlines’ growth but also highlights the strategic importance of Beja Airport, which serves as the primary flight testing center for Hi Fly. The wet-lease operator is instrumental in managing the A380’s operational development, ensuring that the aircraft is ready for its upcoming commercial flights.
The Journey of Global Airlines’ Airbus A380
The Airbus A380, registered as 9H-GLOBL, embarked on its journey from Prestwick, Scotland, where it underwent initial maintenance before proceeding to Dresden for a comprehensive overhaul. The aircraft’s arrival in Beja marks only the second time an A380 has touched down in Portugal, the first being in 2018 when Hi Fly’s A380 showcased the "Save the Coral Reefs" campaign.
Aviation enthusiasts flocked to Beja Airport to witness this historic moment. Hi Fly Group Vice-Chairman Commander Carlos Mirpuri piloted the three-hour flight, completing a 2,237 km (1,390 nautical mile) journey. Mirpuri praised the A380’s advanced technology and maneuverability, noting its impressive handling characteristics akin to smaller Airbus models.
Hi Fly’s Role in Global Airlines’ Expansion
Hi Fly’s expertise in operating the Airbus A380 is a significant asset for Global Airlines. As one of only 15 airlines worldwide to have operated the A380, Hi Fly’s involvement stems from its exceptional technical capabilities in reactivating and managing these large aircraft.
Global Airlines’ Founder & CEO, James Asquith, highlighted this flight as the fifth operation in the company’s development plan, emphasizing the strategic partnership with Hi Fly’s experienced crew. Asquith also indicated plans for expanded flight operations throughout 2025, signaling a continued collaboration aimed at achieving worldwide operations.
Looking Ahead: The Future of Global Airlines
The successful arrival of the Airbus A380 in Beja is a pivotal moment in Global Airlines’ expansion strategy. With Hi Fly’s support, the startup is well-positioned for its planned entry into commercial A380 operations. The collaboration between these two companies underscores a commitment to operational excellence and innovation in the aviation industry.
As Global Airlines prepares for the next chapter of its journey, industry watchers and aviation enthusiasts alike are eager to see how this partnership will shape the future of air travel.
