Etihad Airways to Introduce Airbus A350-1000 on Sydney Route in 2025
ABU DHABI – Etihad Airways is set to enhance its long-haul services by introducing the state-of-the-art Airbus A350-1000 on its Sydney (SYD) to Abu Dhabi (AUH) route starting October 1, 2025. This strategic move marks a significant upgrade in passenger comfort and service quality, featuring advanced Business Class suites that promise an unparalleled travel experience.
The airline plans to fully transition all 10 weekly flights from Sydney to the A350 by January 31, 2026, replacing the Boeing 787-9 on this vital Australia-UAE route. This upgrade will not only enhance passenger comfort but also significantly expand premium capacity, making it an exciting development for travelers.
Etihad Airways’ A350 Deployment: A Game Changer for Sydney Flights
The introduction of the Airbus A350-1000 on the Sydney-Abu Dhabi route represents a major enhancement in Etihad Airways’ long-haul product offerings. Initially, select flights will operate with the A350 starting October 1, 2025, alongside the current Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. However, from January 31, 2026, the A350 will exclusively serve all Sydney routes.
- Increased Capacity: The A350’s introduction will boost overall seat capacity by 10%.
- Premium Class Availability: Business Class capacity will see an increase of over 20%.
This deployment is part of a larger strategy to optimize Etihad’s network, complementing daily A350 flights to Melbourne (MEL) while maintaining high service levels across its Australian gateways.
Arik De, Chief Revenue and Commercial Officer at Etihad Airways, highlighted the airline’s focus on premium travel and enhanced global connectivity. The new aircraft is designed to attract both Australian outbound travelers and international passengers connecting through Abu Dhabi to various destinations in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

The Airbus A350-1000 is equipped with cutting-edge features that redefine in-flight comfort. Key highlights include:
- Fuel Efficiency: Powered by Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines, the A350-1000 offers a 25% reduction in fuel consumption and COâ‚‚ emissions.
- Business Class Amenities: The suite includes 44 private Business Studios with sliding doors, direct aisle access, and 79-inch lie-flat beds. Additional features include wireless charging, Bluetooth headphone pairing, and an 18.5-inch touchscreen for in-flight entertainment.
- Economy Class Comfort: Economy passengers will enjoy 327 Smart Seats with 13-inch touchscreens, innovative recline options, and Bluetooth connectivity.
- Connectivity Options: All guests can access complimentary Wi-Fi Chat packages or upgrade for full internet access during the flight.

Emirates Also Expanding A350 Operations in Australia
Etihad’s A350 deployment aligns with similar plans from Emirates Airline, which is set to introduce the Airbus A350-900ULR to Adelaide (ADL) starting December 1, 2025. Emirates is also expanding its network with retrofitted Airbus A380s and Boeing 777s, enhancing its service to destinations such as Bangkok (BKK), Hong Kong (HKG), and Frankfurt (FRA).
