Skybus Launches Major Expansion with New ATR72 Route from London to Newquay
Skybus, a niche regional operator in the UK, is set to embark on an ambitious expansion plan by taking over a crucial air route. Starting in late November 2025, the airline will introduce an ATR72 aircraft on the London-Gatwick Airport (LGW) to Newquay (NQY) route, following a Public Service Obligation (PSO) agreement with Cornwall County Council.
The closure of Eastern Airlines in October 2025 left the Newquay to London route unserved, jeopardizing the connectivity of the southwest of England to the capital. With Skybus stepping in, passengers will regain access to this important link with a dependable operator.
The inaugural flight by Skybus is slated for November 23, 2025. Initially, flights will operate daily, ramping up to twice-daily services on weekdays beginning February 14, 2026. For the time being, the airline will utilize a 70-seat ATR72 operated by Blue Islands. However, Skybus plans to take delivery of its own 72-seat ATR72 in early 2026 to ensure its continued operation of this 216-mile route.
Skybus has traditionally operated smaller aircraft in its fleet, including three Britten-Norman Islanders and three De Havilland Canada Twin Otters. The introduction of the ATR72 marks a significant upgrade for the airline. A fourth Twin Otter is also set to join the fleet.
H2: Importance of the New Route
The PSO route will be essential for both business and leisure travellers, enabling quicker and easier travel between Cornwall and London. It will also provide seamless access to Gatwick’s extensive international connections.

H3: Insights from Skybus Leadership
Jonathan Hinkles, Managing Director of Skybus, expressed excitement about the new service. He stated, “We are thrilled to launch this new service between Cornwall and London Gatwick. It is not just about making travel easier for passengers; it’s about creating opportunities – for businesses, for tourism, and for the local communities we serve.”
He added, “As a Cornish company with over 40 years of aviation experience, we know how crucial dependable air links are for our region. We’re proud to operate this vital route and are committed to restoring passenger confidence in our services.”
Amy Smith, Managing Director of Cornwall Airport Newquay, shared her enthusiasm as well: “We’re delighted that Skybus, our longest-serving airline partner, will be taking over the vital London Gatwick service later this month. A regular, reliable service is essential for our passengers, and we look forward to collaborating with Skybus to provide that.”
H2: Future Commitments and Enhancements
Skybus was chosen by Cornwall Council through an expedited tender process to resume the route following Eastern Airways’ collapse. A new four-year tender is expected to commence mid-2026, and Skybus has vowed to restore reliability and punctuality to this PSO air service.
The expedited rollout means Blue Islands aircraft will be utilized initially, allowing Skybus to gain valuable experience before fully taking over in mid-2026. The airline also intends to launch same-ticket fast connections between London and the Isles of Scilly by aligning its Newquay flights with existing services by February 2026.
