PNG Air Grows Its Fleet with Two New ATR 72-600 Aircraft from ACIA Aer Leasing
ACIA Aero Leasing recently announced the successful delivery of two ATR 72-600 passenger aircraft to PNG Air, which is the foremost domestic carrier in Papua New Guinea. This initiative forms part of the airline’s strategy aimed at modernizing its fleet.
The newly delivered aircraft are configured to accommodate 70 passengers each. This addition will help enhance connectivity for remote communities across Papua New Guinea. The delivery is a significant step in the airline’s three-year plan to transition to a uniform fleet type.
Mick Mooney, the Chief Executive Officer of ACIA, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership. He stated, “We are delighted to partner with PNG Air in expanding its fleet with two additional ATR72-600s.” He emphasized the vital role PNG Air plays in improving regional connectivity within the country.
Brian Fraser, CEO of PNG Air, described this investment as a crucial milestone for the airline. He noted, “The ATR72-600 offers proven efficiency, reliability, and capacity, which are essential as we streamline our fleet, improve operational performance, and position the airline for sustainable growth.” Partnering with ACIA is enabling PNG Air to accelerate its shift to a modern, single-type fleet, which will enhance the customer experience while delivering long-term value to shareholders and stakeholders across Papua New Guinea.
For nearly four decades, PNG Air has been committed to connecting communities throughout Papua New Guinea. Since its listing on the Port Moresby Stock Exchange in 2008, the airline has been primarily owned by local institutions, including the MRDC Group and NasFund, and has approximately 2,900 local shareholders.
The airline services over 22 destinations, providing essential passenger and cargo transport. In 2024, PNG Air served more than 150,000 passengers. With the arrival of the ATR 72-600 aircraft, the airline is completing its transition to an entirely ATR fleet.
Founded in 2004, ACIA Aero Leasing is a subsidiary of ACIA Aero Capital, based in Ireland. The company has a diverse portfolio of nearly 70 regional passenger and freighter aircraft leased to operators in over 22 countries globally.
