Emirates Unveils Boeing 777 Business Class Design Without Middle Seats

DUBAI- Emirates Airline (EK) has finally tackled a major concern among travelers regarding its Boeing 777-300ER Business Class: the outdated 2-3-2 cabin configuration is being phased out.

The airline is introducing a new 1-2-1 layout across its fleet, guaranteeing direct aisle access for each passenger.

Launched in late 2024, the retrofit program has successfully updated 25 of the planned 120 Boeing 777-300ER aircraft. This transformation is a long-anticipated move for Emirates, enhancing its offering to compete with airlines like Qatar Airways (QR) and Finnair (AY).

Historically, Emirates’ 777 Business Class had drawn criticism for its 2-3-2 seating arrangement, which left many passengers uncomfortable in middle seats. This setup seemed outdated when compared to competitors offering more privacy-focused seating options.

The new 1-2-1 arrangement provides direct aisle access from every seat, along with a spacious 78-inch flat bed. Although the design is based on a Safran model introduced over a decade ago, Emirates has updated the aesthetics with cream leather, darker wood accents, and larger 23-inch HD screens.

Passengers can look forward to aisle access from every seat, leading to four distinct configurations:

Cabin Features and Comfort

The newly designed Business Class cabin includes:

  • 78-inch lie-flat beds for excellent comfort.

  • Intuitive adjustable seat controls with preset options.
  • Spacious tray tables, though they limit aisle access when extended.
  • Minimal storage requiring some reliance on overhead compartments.

The power options are handy, featuring two USB-C ports (27W), a USB-A port, and a universal AC socket. While these capabilities suit smartphones and tablets, laptops necessitate an AC outlet for efficient charging. Unfortunately, wireless charging isn’t offered with this retrofit.

Onboard Amenities and Service

Daytime flights between Dubai and Europe do not include amenity kits, while overnight or long-haul journeys provide BVLGARI kits with essential items. Every seat is equipped with slippers, eye masks, and noise-canceling headsets.

Business Class travelers can access complimentary Wi-Fi with their Skywards accounts. Though the previous OnAir satellite system remains in use, connection speeds reached up to 24 Mbps during tests, surpassing some competitors.

The cabin is served by two restrooms, establishing a 20:1 passenger ratio that is a bit less generous than other airlines such as Singapore Airlines (SQ).

Dining, Beverages, and In-Flight Entertainment

On flight EK65, passengers were treated to breakfast shortly after takeoff and lunch before landing. Emirates’ Business Class features a diverse selection of wines and champagnes, accompanied by menus presented with hot towels and welcome beverages.

The ICE entertainment system continues to impress, offering over 4,000 hours of content. The 23-inch HD screens support Bluetooth headphones and come with a tablet controller for seat and IFE functions.

Availability of the New Emirates 777 Business Class

As of August 2025, 25 Boeing 777-300ERs boast the upgraded layout, with retrofit efforts ongoing at a pace of one aircraft every two weeks.

Emirates aims to update a total of 81 aircraft, while the remainder will be substituted with new Boeing 777-9 and 777-8 models starting in 2026.

Destinations currently serviced by the refreshed cabin include:

  • London Stansted (STN) – EK65/66, EK67/68
  • Boston (BOS) – EK237/238
  • Johannesburg (JNB) – EK765/766
  • Hong Kong (HKG) – EK382/383
  • Seattle (SEA) – EK229/230

Future routes on the horizon include Kuala Lumpur (KUL) starting October 15, 2025, and Phuket (HKT) from December 1, 2025.
