Aer Lingus Boosts Transatlantic Service with New Raleigh-Durham Route

On September 17, 2025, Irish airline Aer Lingus unveiled its most extensive transatlantic summer schedule for 2026. In addition to enhancing existing routes, the Dublin-based airline will expand its long-haul offerings with a new direct service linking Dublin (DUB) to Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) in North Carolina starting in April 2026.

Aer Lingus has significantly increased its transatlantic operations, introducing ten new routes over the past four years. This growth is largely attributed to the arrival of four new Airbus A321XLR aircraft. New destinations include Dublin to Nashville, among others, and for the summer of 2026, the airline will operate its largest transatlantic schedule yet, reflecting an increase in demand and market opportunities.

For the summer of 2026, Aer Lingus plans to add a third daily flight from Dublin to both New York-JFK (JFK) and Boston (BOS). These additional flights will feature late evening departures from Dublin, along with late-night departures from New York and Boston, allowing passengers to maximize their time at both locations.

The new popular routes connecting Dublin to Nashville and Indianapolis, which were launched earlier in 2025, will see their frequency rise from four to five weekly flights during the summer of 2026. Additionally, flights from Dublin to Orlando (MCO) are set to increase to a daily schedule during the peak summer season. Aer Lingus will also enhance its Shannon to Boston services, adding three more weekly flights for a total of ten in the summer.

Expansion of the A321XLR Fleet and New Routes

Aer Lingus is further broadening its long-haul network by introducing a direct route from Dublin to Raleigh-Durham International Airport. This route will also be serviced by the Airbus A321XLR, with an expected delivery of two more units before 2026 begins.

Set to commence in April 2026, this new service will elevate the number of Aer Lingus routes to North America to twenty-six. An airline spokesperson highlighted that the expansion is part of their Dublin Hub strategy, which positions Dublin as a central gateway linking North America, Ireland, the UK, and Europe.

“This service will offer the first direct connection from Raleigh and Durham to Ireland, enhancing links for the broader North Carolina region, which boasts a population exceeding 11 million,” the spokesperson noted. “The year-round route will operate up to five times a week using Aer Lingus’ modern Airbus A321XLR. There are deep historical and economic ties between Ireland and North Carolina, owing much to early Scots-Irish migration.”

Reactions to the New Route

Michael Landguth, President and CEO of the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority, expressed enthusiasm about the new service: “Dublin is a highly sought-after destination for travelers from the Research Triangle area, and we are thrilled that Aer Lingus has chosen RDU for this non-stop service. This flight will provide a seamless travel experience to Ireland and beyond for tourism, business, and educational ventures.”

Lynne Embleton, CEO of Aer Lingus, added: “We’re excited to welcome Raleigh-Durham International Airport into our expanding North American network. It’s a dynamic region with established ties to Ireland, which will further deepen with our new service.”

“Our plans for 2026 showcase significant growth, with added frequencies on our existing routes, offering more options for travelers. We will serve 26 destinations in North America next year, solidifying Aer Lingus as a preferred choice for transatlantic travel,” said Embleton.
