Greece Prepares for Nationwide Strike as Air Traffic Control Joins In

Greece is preparing for a major nationwide strike scheduled for October 1, 2025, which will involve air traffic control personnel. Airlines are already alerting travelers about the possibility of significant disruptions.

The strike is a response to the Greek government’s proposal to implement longer workdays, extending to 13 hours. Workers across various sectors will cease their activities for 24 hours in protest.

Greece’s largest unions, GSEE and ADEDY, are orchestrating this strike and are advocating not only for the reversal of the workday extension but also for increased wages for their members.

This strike is anticipated to create widespread interruptions in schools, hospitals, and government operations, severely impacting the transportation network throughout Greece.

Aegean Airlines and Olympic Air confirmed on September 26, 2025, that air traffic controllers would be participating in the strike. Travelers flying on that date will be offered alternative travel arrangements.

In a joint statement, both airlines noted, “As per the NOTAM from the Civil Aviation Authority, the participation of air traffic controllers may be altered based on a court ruling. Until any decision is reached, flight schedules for AEGEAN and Olympic Air will remain unchanged.”

Jet2 has also alerted its passengers regarding the strike, mentioning that it will disrupt not only air traffic control but also local taxi and ferry services. The airline reassured travelers, stating, “While flights to and from Greece might be impacted, we plan to operate all Jet2.com flights as scheduled, so please arrive at the airport on time.”

Additionally, Ryanair and easyJet are among the other airlines likely to be affected by the strike in Greece.
