Air New Zealand Flight Experiences Lightning Strike, Passengers Witness ‘Fireball’

AUCKLAND— Passengers on an Air New Zealand (NZ) flight experienced a harrowing moment on Tuesday morning when their aircraft was struck by lightning shortly after takeoff. This unsettling event occurred around 7 a.m. amidst severe weather conditions impacting the upper North Island.

The flight, NZ676, which was on its way from Auckland to Dunedin (DUD), had to be redirected to Christchurch (CHC) after a loud bang and a brief flash of fire illuminated the cabin, as per eyewitness accounts.

In the hours leading up to the incident, meteorologists reported close to 500 lightning strikes in the vicinity where NZ676 was flying, as a robust frontal system swept over Auckland and Northland, raising the chances of thunderstorms early that morning.

Passenger Quincy Sio, 35, described the experience as one of the most terrifying moments of his life. Traveling for business with a colleague, he noted that the flight was already turbulent as it departed from Auckland Airport.

Continuous disturbances rocked the aircraft until the sudden lightning strike threw everyone from their seats.

He recounted a “deafening bang” that echoed through the cabin just ten minutes into the flight. As the sound resonated, he witnessed what appeared to be a bright orange “fireball” bursting from the left wing.

Instant panic ensued, with passengers screaming and preparing for a possible crash. Sio mentioned that the loud noise left his ears ringing for hours and triggered a headache.

Despite the chaotic events, the crew did not immediately speak up, which amplified the uncertainty as the aircraft continued on to Christchurch instead of returning to Auckland.

Severe Weather Over the North Island

The MetService reported that 482 lightning strikes occurred over northern New Zealand in the early morning.

The storm system unleashed heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and widespread thunder, prompting an increased thunderstorm risk alert for Auckland and Northland.

This adverse weather coincided nearly perfectly with the departure of NZ676, creating heightened concerns about flight safety during such volatile conditions.

Despite the alarming lightning strike, Air New Zealand confirmed that there were no reported injuries and the flight landed safely in Christchurch.

Chief Operations Officer Alex Marren stated that flight NZ676 was struck by lightning and diverted as a precaution:

The aircraft is currently undergoing standard engineering checks. Consequently, NZ676 Dunedin–Auckland has been canceled. We are rearranging travel for customers on alternate services and have added an extra flight from Christchurch to Dunedin to make sure all passengers reach their destinations.

Marren emphasized that while lightning strikes on aircraft can be shocking, they are not unusual. Modern aircraft are engineered to endure such occurrences, and pilots are trained specifically to manage lightning encounters effectively.
