Emirates and Marriott Revive Wolgan Valley as Premier Ritz-Carlton Lodge

Emirates and Marriott International have reached a landmark agreement to transform the vacant Wolgan Valley property in Australia’s Blue Mountains into the inaugural Ritz-Carlton Lodge. This development marks a significant transition for the luxury resort, which has remained closed for nearly three years.

Set to welcome guests by mid-2026, the 40-room all-inclusive lodge will undergo a renovation worth AU$50 million (approximately US $34 million). Nestled in the 7,000-acre conservation area of the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage site in New South Wales, this initiative highlights Emirates’ commitment to reviving the property.

The resort first opened in 2009 as Emirates Wolgan Valley Resort and later evolved into Emirates One&Only Wolgan Valley through a partnership with One&Only Resorts. However, this partnership came to an end in June 2023 when the resort closed due to ongoing road access issues caused by landslides that obstructed the main route into the valley, leading to staff layoffs and a nonoperational site, although a small local crew was retained for maintenance.

Catastrophic landslides in late 2022 forced the closure of Wolgan Road, impacting access to the resort.

Emirates’ Long-Term Commitment

Emirates has shown its dedication by investing AU$200 million in the property since 2006, involving extensive conservation efforts, including planting over a million native trees and restoring historically significant buildings like the original homestead from 1832.

“We take pride in our long-term investment in Emirates Wolgan Valley Resort, which pioneered one of Australia’s first conservation-focused luxury resorts,” stated Sir Tim Clark, President of Emirates Airline. “Our steadfast commitment has led to this exciting partnership with Marriott International to establish the Ritz-Carlton Lodge.”

This partnership signifies a strategic evolution for both Emirates and Marriott. The Ritz-Carlton Lodges aim to set a new standard for luxury resorts by creating sustainable havens that also offer a unique blend of luxury and craftsmanship in natural environments.

“As the brand’s lodge debut globally, Emirates Wolgan Valley, now a Ritz-Carlton Lodge, will significantly attract our 260 million loyal Marriott Bonvoy members worldwide,” remarked Rajeev Menon, President of Asia Pacific excluding China at Marriott International.

What the Lodge Will Offer

The renovated lodge will feature 40 standalone lodges, each equipped with private pools and personalized amenities. Among the highlights is a unique “sleep-out experience,” inviting guests to camp under some of the clearest night skies.

The main homestead will host a signature restaurant, a lounge bar, a wine room, and welcoming areas. On-site amenities will include an outdoor swimming pool, tennis courts, equestrian stables, a fitness center, and a Ritz-Carlton Spa. A dedicated naturalist hub with expert staff will provide conservation education, all within a footprint of less than 2% of the expansive 7,000-acre reserve.

Access to the resort will be available through the four-wheel-drive Donkey Steps route, marketed as part of an “off-road rural experience,” or via helicopter.

Regional Tourism and Economic Impact

The reopening of the lodge is expected to generate around 150 jobs within the Wolgan Valley community and create opportunities for local suppliers of food and various goods.

The move aligns with a rising demand for premium nature tourism, with Tourism Research Australia reporting 15.5 million domestic visitors to regional NSW in the quarter ending September 2025, contributing AU$5.9 billion (around US $4.1 billion) in spending. International visitors added another 727,300 arrivals and AU$1.2 billion (approximately US $846 million) in expenditure during the same timeframe.

“Emirates Wolgan Valley, a Ritz-Carlton Lodge, will not only cater to discerning travelers but also serve as a catalyst for local economic growth, revitalizing the Wolgan Valley area,” remarked Clark.

Following the lodge’s opening, the property will complement two other Ritz-Carlton locations in Australia: The Ritz-Carlton, Perth (opened in 2019) and The Ritz-Carlton, Melbourne (opened in 2023). However, it will be the only lodge-format offering in the brand’s global portfolio.

Having operated in Australia for three decades, Emirates has forged significant partnerships across the nation, including sports and arts sponsorships. The airline collaborated with federal and state governments, Lithgow City Council, and the community in Wolgan Valley to bring this project to fruition amid existing infrastructure challenges.

The future of road access remains uncertain, but both Emirates and Marriott are optimistic that luxury travelers willing to invest in a unique all-inclusive wilderness experience will not be deterred by the access challenges.
